Synopsis
In this short film, we follow the story of Guarocuya, better known as Enriquillo, one of the most important Taíno leaders in the history of Hispaniola. Created by Dominican animator Ramón Monsanto, the piece shows the moment when everything began: his identity, the injustice he faced, and the spark that ignited one of the first Indigenous rebellions against Spanish rule in the Americas.
From his childhood, marked by the reminder to never forget who he is, to the event that pushes him to rise in resistance, this short captures the most human and personal side of Enriquillo. Although he was raised within the Spanish world, speaking their language and understanding their culture, he was never treated as an equal. That contradiction—between identity and oppression—is at the heart of this story.
