The horror in The Attitude of Being Subjectively Normative does not arise from violence, authority, or the final decision at the lever. It arises from recognition. The audience gradually discovers that the psychological mechanisms operating on Danny are neither extraordinary nor fictional, but ordinary features of social life that have likely influenced every viewer to some degree. The final question is therefore not whether Danny pulls the lever, but whether the viewer can recognize the unseen normative forces that have shaped their own attitudes and behavior. At once, they are confronted with a far more unsettling question: Have I adopted the attitude of being subjectively normative?
