Structuring a beginning, a climax and an ending. An inquiry into the construction of (self) identity, gender issues, memory, and the process of rewriting/reimagining personal recollections. Assembled as a chapter for an autobiographical long film called An Appropriated Self-Portrait, edited using a fragmentary structure that relies on a linear narrative.

Yurumein: Homeland

YURUMEIN (Homeland) is a documentary film which recounts the painful past of the Caribs on the island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean, their extermination at the hands of the British 200+ years ago, the decimation of their culture on the island, and their exile to Central America where much of that culture survived, even thrived. YURUMEIN (your -o- main) also explores what few cultural remnants of the Caribs, also known as Garifuna, still exist on St. Vincent and the beginnings of a movement to teach and revitalize Garifuna language, music and dance, and ritual to younger generations of Garifuna/ Caribs on St. Vincent.

"A Passagem" portrays a brief glimpse into the lives of Idalina (82) and Brazida (79), two Portuguese old shepherd women from Algarve, who live in the middle of nowhere. The film speaks volumes about their lives as well as the twilight of life itself. Two old sisters with their Stoic philosophy, tell the story of their hard works, way of living, as well as a tragedy of husband´s accidental death and more than that, tell the story of countless honourable poor people on every continent. There is an unique interaction and universal human relationship between a Bangladeshi filmmaker and two old Portuguese shepherd despite language and socio-cultural barrier. This film was produced as a “graduation film” for the Erasmus Mundus DocNomads master program in documentary film-directing.

"Somewhere out of the time" is a free adaptation of a poem called "Punishment" by the famous Iranian poet, "Ahmad Shamlou". This film is the first filmmaking experience of Parham Sarkashiki, which was shown for the first time at the Rome Film Festival. The film is narrated in the 1950s in Tehran's "Qasr" prison, a very dangerous prison that is considered the most important prison in Iran. The film tells the story of a man who was sentenced to prison for the crime of seeking freedom.

These effects can sometimes be seen in physical appearances and can even manifest in violent tendencies. As these children grow up, the tendencies become more uncontrolled, leading to difficulties fitting into society. This film explores the lives of 4 adolescents with FASDs and the effects that prenatal alcohol exposure has had, and continues to have, on their journeys to finding independence, fulfillment, and understanding the world around them.

As a manatee, one has to be extremely unlucky to be given a name. The young Hamilton is a living example of this. 600 kilos of pure friendliness – a sea cow, or manatee, is not exactly a paragon of beauty. However, they are without doubt the friendliest giants that inhabit the crystal waters of Florida’s rivers and shores. For the first time, a team of filmmakers has managed to observe a manatee for three years. As a result, the footage astounded even the experienced researchers of the Sirenia Projects. Besides, the gorgeous images of sea birds, alligators and dolphins depict the astonishing eco-system of the Gulf Coast and Florida’s crystal clear rivers.
