"Detour" is a sort of offshoot of "Contour" where Law (Eric Jacobus) goes to rent an apartment and strikes a deal with the landlord (Shaun Finney) where he'll get a discount on his deposit if he takes care of a squatter (Chelsea Steffensen) outside.

Produced for Glass Eye Pix as part of their 2008 Creepy Christmas Online Film Festival, in which each short was inspired by the inhabitants of a Christmas diorama advent calendar. Each filmmaker was assigned a specific date and given the props that were used in that window to use in their short. This is the tenth film in the series.

Mike, half Swiss, half American, is a friend of Portuguese director Fernando Lopes. He’s a painter and has been living in Portugal for 30 years, making him also Portuguese. His stage name is Michael Biberstein. His internationally acclaimed works belong to some of the most important collections and museums around the world. He and Fernando Lopes decided to embrace this adventure after a conversation they had in a mutual friend’s house. The result is this movie: an inner journey about the creation of a painting where its silence, its mystery and magic were filmed.

At dawn, the mother blesses her son bidding him farewell. He is accompanied by his father. Together they go to the station. There, his girlfriend is waiting for him. She does not only see him off, but is going to leave with him. The father does not let her go. They stay, and the boy goes to where a new life awaits him, without the father’s watchful eye, mother’s care and girlfriend’s tears. According to the director, here the main character had difficult relationships, and there begins a new stage, his life will change, but we will not see it.

Interpretive Site: Hanford Reach

Hanford Reach, one of the most important wildlife refuges in Washington state, is an inadvertent legacy of the United States’ nuclear weapons program. Lands within the monument originally served as a buffer around the Hanford Nuclear Reservation. This short one-shot film is part of a series called Interpretive Sites. Directed by Adam Sekuler and choreographed by Karn Junkinsmith, these works explore abandoned locations using dance as an interpretive tool to elicit a sites history.
