A 14-years-old girl begs for money on the street with her mother. A guy about the same age gives them a coin every day he passes by, pushing his bicycle. Days are passing by, all the same, the call of the mosque scans time. One day the mother dies. The girl now begs alone for money and wears her mother's burka. The young guy passing by this time gives the girl a flower instead of a coin.

Untitled (Zimbabwean Queen of Rave)

In 1991 I was at high school with John Miller, Rozallaʼs brother when her break-through single “Everybodyʼs Free (To Feel Good)” was released. It was amazing to have a Zimbabwean song topping the international music charts. This was at the height of the rave scene and Rozalla became known as ʻThe Queen of Raveʼ. This was also at a time when protests in South Africa were boiling over. In Untitled (Zimbabwean Queen of Rave) I combine some of these elements and also later events such as my experience of attending large public raves in Europe and later in Zimbabwe. The video expresses a personal reality and also the cultural gap between white and black that I was experiencing. These were two fundamentally different scenarios, yet each was guided by crowd psychology and longing for a different reality.

Urban imagery invades the countryside in the unique musical landscape of les Acadiens.

¡Mezquita no!

The installation of an oratory in the ground floors of a block of flats led to the protesting of the neighbors who complaint about the place not having the conditions to accommodate a place of worship. The Muslim community had been given a provisional license by the Town Council so that they could celebrate Ramadan and then move somewhere else. But the neighbors complaint because they had been deceived by the Town Council: they had been protesting for months against the opening of this oratory. Once the conflict ended with the relocation of the oratory in a waste ground outside Santa Coloma, "No mosque!" tries to be a documentary about dialogue and reflection, about the facts, reasons and consequences of a case which is neither the first nor the last of this nature and which is more and more common in the European society, recipient of a great number of immigrants.

Living in a slum damaged by the atomic bomb and watching elderly first-generation zainichi hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) pass away one after another, Pak felt compelled to break their silence with this documentary, her first. Using up all her savings and going into debt, she teamed up with cinematographer Otsu Koshiro and collected these testimonials from zainichi North and South Koreans living in Hiroshima and South Korean hibakusha visiting Japan for medical treatment.

Noturno de um piano

This music-video piece denounces the declining state of classical music by throwing a piano into the sea as a symbol of high culture submerging. The experiment focuses a grand piano floating and drifting until it sinks. This video questions the artist's role in today's society and the piano as an icon that submerges, subverted by mass culture.

This witty and artistic portrait film shows the joy and pain of Marko Kompus, a poet from the legendary Tartu literary group "Erakkond". The author of the film, Jaan-Jürgen Klaus, who has previously filmed other cult figures from Tartu, follows Elva's hermit poet all year round.

Sun-Wha lives in Karibong-Dong. Kuro-Gongdan, the mecca of industrialization and Karibong-Dong, the cultural spot of the factory workers in which Chosun tribe Town is located and foreign labors are hanging around now. Sun-wha is going to leave Garibong because of the company she works for is moving. During the packing, her precious wardrobe is broken. She feels distressed. Her pregnant friend, Hyang-Mi comes to see Sun-Hwa off and Sun-Hwa looks back at Karibong. She feels like that all her tearful stories during the 1970’s and the 1980’s in Karibong are disappearing.

What Are You Going to Do When You Get Out of Here?

A complex landscape of improvised situations immersed in a perpetual network of mines under the Slovenian town of Trbovlje (Iztok Kovács' hometown and his main source of inspiration). The realistic imagery of this post-socialist city, which seems to still exist outside of time, has triggered the impulse of this introspective introspection by a team of renowned dancers and filmmakers. The physical tension and human flashes of seven bodies crashing into a deliberately chosen enclosed environment, surrounded by the unlit warmth and humidity of the underworld, inhabit and create the poetic mood of the film, echoing Tarkovsky and Beckett.

Resonating Surfaces

Resonating Surfaces is triple portrait, of a city, a woman and an attitude to life. For the personal story of Suely Rolnik, who is a Brazilian psychoanalyst currently living in São Paulo, involves the Brazilian dictatorship of the sixties as well as the Parisian intellectual climate surrounding Deleuze and Guattari in the seventies. The film is woven through by different themes: the other and the relation to otherness, the connection between body and power, the voice and, ultimately, the micropolitics of desire and of resistance.

God on Our Side
