A ground-breaking project, Mind if I Call You Sir? is an oral history video project documenting queer Latina/o histories through testimonies on gender expression by self-identified Butch Lesbians and Female-to-Male Transgendered men. As a femme-identified Latina lesbian and community scholar, Karla E. Rosales has devoted her academic and artistic pursuits to issues of gender identity in the Latina community. Her research led her to uncover a growing rift between the ‘old school’ Butch Lesbian community and the rapidly-growing FTM community, whose numbers are increasing.
Europe

Europe

2004 • 43 min • Latvia
Armands and Žaks are two friends who decide to take a closer look at the state of their country and its capital city, Riga. They are well aware of the glossy promotional videos that showcase Latvia as a land of happy people and a thriving economy. However, their own observations paint a different picture. They see a country that is not well-organized, and where any effort to improve things is quickly stifled. They notice that many of the people in power seem to be more concerned with playing their daily theatrics than actually working towards bettering the country. Armands and Žaks come to the realization that most of their fellow citizens are either forgetful or masochistic, as they repeatedly vote for these politicians who are not working towards any actual change. Despite this, the two remain hopeful that things will get better as they remind themselves that they are living in Europe, after all.

Vignettes of New England Steam

2004 • 58 min • United States of America
Vignettes of the New England Steam features the films of noted rail photographers Albert Michaud and William P. Price, as they document the handsome steam power (and the occasional pesky diesel) of the Grand Trump, Central Vermont, Boston & Maine, and New York, New Haven & Hartford Railroads. The mostly color and mostly 16mm production begins with the Grand Trunk in New Hampshire, then moves to the Central Vermont in the White River Jct vicinity, and the Boston & Maine and New Haven, primarily around Boston. Many wheel arrangements are featured, as is the passenger and freight rolling stock of the era ...including truss-rodded clerestory-roofed wooden maroon passenger cars on the B&M! So come along with Clear Block Productions as we journey back to the late 1940's and early 1950's to witness Steam's Final Stand in the Northeast in Vignettes of the New England Steam.

Since 1969, the Modca Café on Hamra Street has been synonymous with Beirut. Now, after more than thirty years, it is being demolished. In the young people fighting helplessly to preserve this embodiment of the city’s memory, we see a longing for and a vicarious experience of ‘social activism’. The camera attempts to resist traditional video activism as it accompanies these young people. Moving into the fluorescent light of the newly built mass retailer, the identity of the city is superimposed onto the fate of the café. A bold documentary essay that attempts to awaken various collective memories.
