How to Make a Phantastik Film

A satirical film featuring a housewife and her attempts at counterculture. A one minute film commissioned by the Images Festival in 2003 for their Minute Movies program. It was designed specifically for the experimental-film-lovin’ audience at the festival. It pokes a bit of fun at experimental filmmakers in general, and it actually demonstrates a valid but obscure technique. This technique took me almost two years to figure out, and I subsequently discovered that it was already known and was deliberately kept from me. It’s about sharing techniques instead of hoarding them, and having fun. It won Jury’s Choice and Audience Favorite at the CSIF $100 Film Festival, Best Film Overall at the Toronto One Minute Film and Video Festival and received Special Mention by the jury at The Festival International de Court Metrage in Lille.

The hero is the loneliest little girl in the world. She has no company. She is the only pupil at the school, as well as the last child in a beautiful ancient village. Only elderly people around her as well as an archaic kind of life. Her journey from her house to the school (the school only for her) reveals the real string of motions, colors, sounds, folk customs, habits, objects, buildings, faces… all that seems to be slowly fading to disappearance. The film is a metaphor for vanishing of a nation.

Wind of Change

"Wind of Change" is a video work by Wolfgang Tillmans that features street musicians playing the 1990 song of the same name in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin. In the video, the musicians are captured in a candid, observational style, typical of Tillmans' photographic approach. The song itself, a power ballad by the Scorpions, became an anthem associated with the fall of the Berlin Wall and the end of the Cold War, making the video a poignant reflection on that historical moment and its continuing resonance

This testimonial film featuring former children of the Holocaust who endured Nazi occupation in Europe, shows that even after having experienced deep suffering, they feel a deep love for life. These survivors lived today in Argentina and are members of “Children of the Shoah in Argentina”. Their multiple voices speak about the pain of having been kept apart from their biological families and having lived their childhood in forced silence. They tell us how they were rescued by their saviors, and of their gratitude towards them.
