flesh of my flesh

flesh of my flesh

2001 • 11 min • Canada
Drawing on pre-biblical mythology, "flesh of my flesh" is a queer retelling of the "first" murder. Abel returns from the wars of God our Father to a bombed out and pillaged Canaan. His brother/lover Cain leads him to a barren field where, in an effort to reinstate the garden of paradise, he performs the sacrificial ritual. The consequence (for Cain and all his tribe) is banishment, to the land "east of Normal."

EBIZUKA in my own field

EBIZUKA in my own field

2001 • 40 min • Japan
In April 2000, I started photographing Koichi Ebitsuka's works. Mr. Ebitsuka was a teacher at Tama Art University, and he happened to be appointed concurrently to the second department of art, where I work, and we became close. He was born in 1951, so he is 16 years younger than me. I wanted to think about and experience the "contemporary art" that I hadn't been to. And he, being selfish, visited his atelier and was shown around his works on an island in the Seto Inland Sea. For me, the year 2000 was a year of Ebitsuka-san's sculptures.

The film follows the lives of women in two brothels in the slums of Bombay. Some of the women are old, some are very young, but they have all been cheated into the business. And cheated out of life. For ten years now, Vinay, a social worker, has been trying to help them by saving them from AIDS and giving them some comfort. Although they are degraded and exploited outcasts, these women manage to retain some human dignity and cheerfulness. And some hope.

There are many in-betweens in my film. The most relevant that are in the source material are essential to the film, they are their own Time and Space generators, they are what exists between each of the imagens.

Róbert Puzsér, along with others, investigated an anarchist group that emerged from an Eger-based band. A former member, who fears retaliation from the group, gives a statement, as does Vogel, who discusses the organization's objectives. One of the leaders explains why their website contains bomb-making instructions and why it includes search keywords commonly used by children. According to them, once the bomb is made, the creator will use it to blow up their own family members, creating chaos. They believe that families must be destroyed in order to achieve individual freedom. Another member promotes LSD as the source of happiness, with the goal of distributing synthetic LSD through the water supply. They claim that laboratories will soon be established where chemists and doctors will manufacture the substance, arguing that as many people as possible need to be awakened. Well, the filmmakers are also contributing to this effort.

Documents the lives of three long-haul truck drivers whose routes take them throughout North America - even to the Arctic. The complexity of their work is on display as bad weather, unsafe driving conditions, and rising fuel prices add to the stress of being away from home for weeks at a time.
