This documentary introduces us on the daily life of a group of kids who live on the street. Through the narrative and experiences of the protagonists, we discover the Latin American marginality hidden beneath a contemporary city like Santiago de Chile. The camera turns into another one of the group, eventually becoming part of this type of family life born from the tight friendship with which these kids survive.

I Thought I Was Seeing Convicts

Images from the maximum-security prison in Corcoran, California. A surveillance camera shows a pie-shaped segment of the concrete yard where the prisoners, dressed in shorts and mostly shirtless, are allowed to spend half an hour a day. When one convict attacks another, those not involved lay flat on the ground, arms over their heads. They know that when a fight breaks out, the guard calls out a warning and then fires rubber bullets. If the fight continues, the guard shoots real bullets. The pictures are silent, the trail of gun smoke drifts across the picture. The camera and the gun are right next to each other.

Eleven

Eleven, which played at the 2001 Venice Film Festival, is the first short film of director Zhang Lu. He is a forty-year-old writer whose works engage with issues of cultural difference stemming from his own background as a member of the Korean cultural minority in China. Eleven is a fourteen-minute long vignette, virtually silent, of an eleven-year-old boy's encounter with a group of soccer players his own age.

As Rendova's forest rapidly disappears, the loggers set their sights on a deserted island held sacred by the villagers. Through evocative archival images, 'Since the Company Came' questions the ongoing legacy of colonial attitudes to land and people.
