Amnesia

Amnesia

2015 • 54 min • Poland
The film combines the personal, political, and historical, tracing the horror of a pogrom committed against the Jewish residents of the Polish city of Kielce on the 4th of July 1946. This atrocity was committed by their neighbors, fellow Poles of Kielce. This film seeks to gain some perspective on the Kielce Pogrom, an event that has been all but scrubbed from the history of Poland. The filmmaker searches for answers, even reflecting on his own family's complicity (and perhaps more) in the event. Given the current political climate in 21st century Poland, this film is fiercely relevant today, as we must confront and combat the legacies of anti-Semitism in Europe and around the world.

Yves Netzhammer's usually language-free animations offer freaky in-a-nutshell versions of all the disturbing sights and events we (are forced to) witness every day. Befitting an age of indifference, these series of grotesque rituals and absurd cycles are presented in a glacial, uncaring aesthetic. Genuinely disturbing genius.

7-channel video installation, 35mm, b&w. Music:Jin Wang. In making the film noir drama The Fifth Night, Yang used different lenses for each camera, but filmed everything at the same moment, creating a labyrinthine, live-feed effect. The work recalls the narrative structure of a traditional Chinese hand-scroll, while its multiple perspectives are suggestive of an M. C. Escher drawing. The synchronous scene was captured in a single take, with the work running for 10 minutes and 37 seconds, the exact length of a reel of film.
An Idiot's Guide to Politics

An Idiot's Guide to Politics

2015 • 58 min • United Kingdom
Comedian Jolyon Rubinstein is on a mission. He wants to find out why the Facebook generation is so disengaged from politics. With the general election just around the corner, according to a recent survey less than a quarter of under 25s plan to vote. Is this just apathy and ignorance? Or is something else going on? The film is packed with stunts, pranks and some pretty serious interviews in which Jolyon seeks to find the answers. On the way he takes a fire engine armed with fireproof underpants to Conservative Party HQ ('liar, liar, pants on fire'); visits UKIP HQ to use his lie-detecting test to help Nigel Farage root out members hiding a BNP past; takes a union leader a statue of Ed Miliband as Wallace to thank him for getting Ed elected Labour leader - a present from the Conservatives; and tries to raise £50k to have dinner with the PM - it's the going rate for Tory Party donors, he learns.
