Caste on the Menu Card

Caste on the Menu Card

2015 • 21 min
This film made by students of the School of Media and Cultural Studies at the Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS), focuses on beef-eating practices in Mumbai. It portrays the prevalence of caste differentiation in food choices of people in Mumbai, how it causes exclusion, and touches upon concerns related to livelihood, social inclusion and human rights. By tracing the mythological and historical roots of meat-eating culture in India, the film explores the hierarchy maintained by Brahminical standards and their subversions. This is demonstrated through the stand taken on dealing with the political economy of the leather and meat industries. The film also follows the tumultuous scene of university caste politics through the demand for the inclusion of beef in institutions’ canteen menus. The filmmakers observe that many restaurants in Mumbai offer beef delicacies, but off the menu.

Susan Lowe is most well known as an actress in the early movies of filmmaker John Waters. This short portrait film focuses on Susan's life as an artist and in particular her works known as 'Nuthouse Drawings'. Sometimes thought of as painting friends, Susan started creating these works while staying at a psychiatric hospital. Serving as a way to battle her depression, fear, and loneliness, the 'Nuthouse Drawings' are a one of a kind look into the mind of one of Baltimore's most imaginative artists.
Before David

Before David

2015 • 20 min
A short documentary film about pre-partum depression, its symptoms, and the difficulties it poses when a woman is going through extreme physical and emotional changes. The film reflects on the constructed image of the pregnant woman in Western society, and on the expectations placed on women at a time when they are undergoing an extreme physical and emotional transformation. It challenges the prevalent idea that pregnancy is an antidote to depression in women, and that symptoms of depression tend to occur only after birth, as postpartum depression. "Before David" aims to create awareness and start a conversation about women’s mental health during pregnancy, and about the dangers of antenatal depression for women and their newborns.
