Between 2014 and 2017, McClodden revived the work of deceased Black queer artists who were active during the 1980s AIDS epidemic, including the poet and activist Essex Hemphill. Here, McClodden remakes a scene from Marlon Riggs’s essay-film Tongues Untied (1989), in which Hemphill recites a passage from writer Audre Lorde’s Sister Outsider: Essays and Speeches (1984). McClodden describes the video as “a portrait of self-contained conflict and rage,” with Hemphill gazing directly into the camera. Conceived as a “duet” between Hemphill and Lorde, it also underscores Hemphill’s commitment to Black feminist thought, highlighting the transfer of language and influence from one poet-activist to another. The video deals with peripheral areas of Milan: spaces excluded from the sparkling imagery advertising EXPO2015. Only unproductive parcels, debris of urban gardens and spontaneous weeds are left. Shot at night in these dehumanized areas, barely revealed by street lights or by the flashlight of night security guards. The reverberation of off-screen sounds gives back the vastness of these construction sites, whose complete vision is denied to the viewer. Gradually some radio conversations emerge.

"As a filmmaker, I spend many hours examining the world through a lens. When asked to reflect on the collections at the Huntington, I was instantly drawn to the 1665 edition of Micrographia, a seminal work of observations made with the aid of a microscope by the great natural philosopher Robert Hooke. As I subsequently wandered the gardens and collections I searched for resonances in texture and form, seeking out plants and objects that suggested the exquisite delicacy of the engraved illustrations in Micrographia." Transforming Gender

Transforming Gender

2015 • 43 min
The battle over the rights and freedoms of transgender individuals is the first great civil rights struggle of the 21st century. And while their battle for freedom is decades behind that of gays and lesbians, blacks or women, few doubt that the era of transgendered enfranchisement is upon us. TRANSFORMING GENDER tells this story exclusively through the voices of transgender people from all walks of life. Through a set of intimate vignettes the film opens up the world of transgender people to an audience that may have little awareness of what it means to be-fundamentally and in your deepest core-in conflict with the gender you were assigned at birth.
