This project began out of a desire to express the grief experienced from the loss of a parent. While attempting to describe this grief through language — visual or otherwise — it became evident that some events are indescribable without losing the very agency one has in having experienced the loss in the first place.

The video piece questions the role of images in current and historical events. Even as these events, and their representations, resonate in our own memories from various media, the video is navigating the blurred lines between fiction and reality, the visible and the unseen, audible and mute, imaginable and unimaginable.

Public Service Announcement

Public Service Announcement

2014 • 15 min
Public Service Announcement introduces the viewer to the political structure and history of the fictional republic of Azania. Divided into three ‘acts’, the film begins with a monologue by an unidentified narrator and seemingly omnipotent presence. As the Azanian myth unfolds against a visual backdrop of neon and black, the genealogy of its protagonists becomes increasingly complex and the viewer is left with the sense that this matriarchal government is an autocratic state. The rebirth and catharsis represented by the growing procession of human and animal figures in the third act suggest that we have witnessed a revolution and the birth of a new era. Building on previous work, the artist uses this incarnation of Azania as a satirical lens through which to critique the flawed, convoluted political and symbolic rhetoric used in nation-building and the legitimization of ruling elites.

Seoungho Cho writes: "When I noticed some moments from my studio window in its prosaic reality, I started to make a 'List' of these accumulated moments of lights and colors in time suggesting a flow of unconsciousness. Ironically, throughout the seasons with endless changes of light and shadows, I became to numb to time. I have been in the midst of a meditation, which extended both through my visual and psychological plane."

100 Million People Adrift The Ripples of China's Urban Upheaval

100 Million People Adrift The Ripples of China's Urban Upheaval

2014 • 49 min • Japan
In 2014, under the "new type of urbanization" plan, a nationwide urban village renovation program was rolled out, affecting about 100 million people. At the same time, the residency permit policy, which is seen as a transitional means of "household registration reform," began to be fully implemented, claiming that it would give migrant workers benefits almost equal to those enjoyed by the urban household population, but the migrant workers, who are supposed to be the beneficiaries, were not convinced. For them, the massive demolition and relocation have destroyed their only cheap living environment in the city, and the price they need to pay to "become a city dweller" is too high for them to afford, so they prefer to wander without a home.
Boding

Boding

2014 • 9 min • Cambodia
Kanitha Tith’s 2014 artist film Boding is an evocative portrait of Phnom Penh’s White Building, Cambodia’s first public housing project built for moderate-income residents during the early 1960s. Originally consisting of 468 apartments, the White Building (like the whole city that surrounds it) was abandoned during the Khmer Rouge regime rule in the 1970s. After their fall in 1979, the building fell into disrepair but was still a home for its original residents, artists, community educators and others who built a vibrant community there. Tith’s film is a patient walkthrough of the “boding” (as it is popularly called by locals) that allows the viewer an unhurried look at its corridors, surfaces and the manifestations of life inside and around it.

This work is a study of the durative moment of montage between three bodies: the digital, the filmic and the human. It is a moment of confrontation between these three bodily apparatuses. It is about how they are constantly at odds with each other and yet, also in awe of each other. - looking and looking and trying to feel the others, become the others and destroy the others. How is it that they can be merged and become something beyond their separateness? How can they, together, become a fourth body?
