Blue and Red

Blue and Red

2014 • 26 min
Blue and Red takes place in two different cities, weaving together sequences of night-time spectacles in the public spaces of Guangzhou (where Zhou lives) with footage of the 2013–14 Occupy Bangkok protests that took place while he was visiting the city. In both cities, Zhou concentrates on public spaces as collective experience, highlighting the areas and their occupants in washes of color, particularly the electric blue of LED light, which he contrasts with the surface of a third space, the toxic red run-off of a heavy metal mine in northern Guangdong province.

So equipped, she heads off on an adventure, with the most extraordinary results.

A cinema shot. The relationship that a shoot-out has with the image becomes somewhat different; the celluloid no longer supports, at 24 frames per second, the representation of a shooting, either acted or documented, but the celluloid has now become the direct carrier, the affected, in the shot in each frame.

Jutra

Jutra

2014 • 13 min • Canada
Through the magic of editing and animation, Claude Jutra is seen in dialogue with himself at various stages of his life – becoming the spirited narrator of his own biography. Excerpts from family films, interviews, and clips from some of Jutra's well-known works are seamlessly intertwined with these sequences, forming a portrait of a man whose life was devoted to creativity. Jutra is simultaneously a homage, a love letter to cinema, and the dramatic story of a brilliant artist whose life was all-too-short.

Aquí nuestro presente parece suspendido

2014 • 4 min
During a tour of one of the rooms of the Museo Casa de la Memoria Indómita (Museum of Indomitable Memory), which displays documents, photographs, and objects related to forced disappearances during the dirty war in Mexico, we attend the audiovisual enunciation of a phrase, perhaps diffuse, that becomes less and less circumstantial. The dirty war never ended. Our present is closed, contracted by a plane-sequence in the middle of a Memory that we desire more and more untamed.
State of Emergence

State of Emergence

2014 • 55 min
State of Emergence is a zombie movie without zombies. Society asks: Who is the enemy? From where does he attack? How do we distinguish him from one of our own, and how do we immunize ourselves against him? But it's too late for these questions. The illness that society feels victimized by has metastasized to an irreversible degree. It can't be cured with surgery, heavy medication, or even wholesale amputation. "Stability at all costs! No life-support machine is too expensive!" But the virus is becoming stronger than its host, and its hostility is irrepressible. Something's happening. Prepare yourselves. Call the Police! Call the Army! Stock up and wait for this whole thing to blow over. But soon it's inescapable - it's everywhere. "You are stronger than us, but soon I think, they'll be stronger than you." Maybe it's time to see how the other half lives.

Pigs

2014 • 8 min • Malaysia, Singapore, United States of America
Iseng, a little boy with Down's syndrome, occupies himself by wandering about the pig-sty. His mother has lost her baby and is so wrapped up in grief she barely takes any notice of her son. A sick piglet gives Iseng an idea: in an attempt to comfort his mother and gain her attention he places the animal in the empty cradle. But when his mother discovers the piglet, it is already dead. Revolted by the sight, she initially rejects her son. But then she recognises Iseng’s need for love. Concentrating on looks and gestures rather than words and music – both of which are absent – this short film makes a silent appeal not to dwell on what is lost but to recognise and cherish life’s gifts.
Why Banana Snarls

Why Banana Snarls

2014 • 10 min • Russia
It is not much fun having to spend the whole day in a banana costume. But things take a turn for the worse for this poor chap when one day he wakes up to discover he has grown a long tail. At first he tries to get rid of it. But no matter what he tries – doctors, saws, healers – nothing seems to help. He cannot hide it either. It is just too long and it is always poking out. And so he just tries to live with his tail. But before long the poor guy hast lost his job, his friends, everything. Nobody wants him. But would it not be a pity if there were no place in this world for such a kind person who is just a little bit different? An inventively quirky animation laced with black humour that pokes fun at narrow-mindedness and intolerance.
