Hitori Kakurenbo: Hide-and-Seek

2014 • 7 min • United States of America
Hitori Kakurenbo in Japanese refers to an urban legend ritual that is meant to summon a ghost or other spirit into ones home. As early as July 2007, descriptions of how to play One-Man Hide and Seek were posted on Japanese horror bulletin boards. The instructions tell the reader to fill a bathtub with stuffed animals, turn off all of the lights and chant ritualistic phrases while holding a knife. It asserted that people who had done this found that the toys had moved slightly and the television had turned on, blaring music. This is a story of a young woman playing this game, and the events that happened to her during the night. This chilling account of the supernatural, will keep the audience at the edge or their seats and have them wondering would they dare to play this game.

Notes from the Anthropocene

Notes from the Anthropocene

2014 • 14 min
Filmed in vibrant super 16mm color, and black and white film, Notes from the Anthropocene, is a sensory elegy to the dinosaur. The dinosaur icon shifts from narratives of extinction, to human exceptionalism, and power. Its materiality whether fossil or plastic toy has, through popular culture, become entrenched in the imaginary of oil extraction and fossil fuel production. Notes from the Anthropocene is a speculative iconological look at the dinosaur, delivered by an imagined museum guide who ponders our symbolic relationship to an increasing ambivalence towards the natural world. The mythic dinosaurs that emerge resist domestication and seek to transcend fantasies of human dominion.

The kitchen, dance hall, dressing room, open-air bath, rest room, dining room, and detached workshop, all overlooking the village on a bare cliff, still haunting. To get to the entrance, you have to follow a mountain path as if you were climbing a mountain; such a place still existed in Japan. The amount of yokai that wafts from the screen is so overwhelming that one cannot take one's eyes off the screen.
