Roller Derby in the Low Countries

In this short documentary, we take a look at the history and future of roller derby in the Netherlands, while also touching on subjects such as image and the rise of men’s teams in this traditionally female sport. We tried to capture the Roller Derby culture with grungy 16mm film overlays and an eclectic mix of colors, switching from black and white, back to color. This, combined with the use of stock footage, the Whip It trailer and choice of music really help to sell the vibe and sensibilities of roller derby.

But the cyborg has been corrupted by a cyberfeminist virus. This Other self embodies a dangerous idea: that there are parts of ourselves beyond our control. This lo-fi sci-fi features two transgender men, performing a very queer version of their own lives. It is an experimental hybrid of documentary, fiction and performance art.

Model Village

From South Korea it can only just be seen and looks like a film set. The brightly painted concrete flats are empty shells, the flagpole is one of the tallest in the world and the loudspeakers blast nationalist slogans and songs. Model Village envisages a visit to this forbidden zone.

It is a self-portrait that features my sister Yagazie as a proxy subject. The sari she wears in the film is our mother’s kurai, one of her wedding saris, and the music is an evening raga our uncle played every evening at his house in Bangsar, Malaysia.
