Ali: The Mission

Ali: The Mission

2013 • 13 min • United States of America
The feats of Muhammad Ali's remarkable life. In 1990, the boxing legend traveled to Iraq to press a plea for peace and negotiate with Saddam Hussein for the release of U.S. civilians taken hostage after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. Ali risked his reputation, health and safety for the freedom of prisoners held by Hussein as "human shields" to deter U.S. military strikes. Only six weeks after Ali brought 15 hostages back home to their relieved families, Operation Desert Storm bombarded Iraq.
The Field

The Field

2013 • 13 min
A romantic picnic in a strangely idyllic field goes awry when a couple find themselves trapped and unable to leave. Forced to confront the cracks in their relationship they slowly descend into a bitter web of jealousy, petty recriminations and violence. Starring Alice Lowe (of 'Sightseers' and 'Sherlock' fame) and picked to premiere at the 2013 London Film Festival, The Field is written and directed by Andy Orr & Matt Jones. It is a blackly comic look at the kind of long term relationships that seem to exist in a strange limbo of break up and make up, of domesticated desire and unfulfilled promise. In short - an unromantic comedy.

On a River in Ireland

On a River in Ireland

2013 • 53 min • Ireland
From PBS - The Shannon is Ireland's greatest geographical landmark and the longest river. It is both a barrier and highway - a silver ribbon holding back the rugged landscapes of the west from the gentler plains to the east. On its journey south, the Shannon passes through a huge palette of rural landscapes; where on little-known backwaters, Ireland's wild animals and plants still thrive as almost nowhere else. For a year, wildlife cameraman Colin Stafford-Johnson lives on the river - camping on its banks, exploring its countless tributaries in a traditional canoe, following the river from dawn to dusk through the four seasons, on a quest to film the natural history of the Shannon as it has never been seen or heard or experienced before.

Saving Otter 501

Saving Otter 501

2013 • 53 min • United States of America
From PBS and NATURE - On a typical late summer day a baby sea otter washes up on the beach in Monterey, California - hungry, lost, injured. It's a tragic event, but not surprising. California sea otters are struggling. For decades marine biologist Karl Mayer and his small staff have worked unceasingly - one otter at a time - to bring this "keystone" species back from the brink of extinction so it can play its important role in the local marine environment. But the effort has stalled, and no one knows why. This is the story of the Monterey Bay Aquarium's 501st attempt to save an orphan otter. From her discovery as a stranded newborn pup crying on the beach through her rehabilitation in secret roof tanks atop the Aquarium, we follow as Otter 501 learns how to dive, hunt, eat, and fend for herself in the wild, where survival is a long shot at best.

Sleepiness

Sleepiness

2013 • 36 min
Sleepiness is the synesthetic result of two different times, the image belongs to the present tense and audio to a reconstruction of what the sound of that space would be in a past tense, in a time when that space did not seem to stand still in time, but in a time in progress. that was lived and worked. It is these visible marks in space, this silence, the birds and echoes in the Douro, the naked architecture but with the marks of their experience that made me hear and want to hear the sounds of other times. Filmed in 2012 and 2013 in Couto Mineiro do Pejão, inactive anthracite mines since 1994 due to the end of all ore.
