This work represents the inevitable separation of father and son as they take separate paths in their life's journey. Two men arrive in the desert under a turbulent sky. They appear at the far extremes of the frame and walk toward us on a trajectory that takes them closer to each other, until they are walking side by side. Eventually they cross paths and begin to separate. The gap between them widens until they leave the outer edges of the frame.

Separated by four sections, this film embraces the unpolished aesthetic of contact printed black & white film stock and creates a link with basic formal contemporary dance elements. These elements are then subjected to various re-photographic techniques such as reversal color film stock, homemade filters and light manipulations. I used these techniques to transform the dancers' movements from representation to abstraction.

Over and Over Again

I like going in and out of worlds. I want to believe in reincarnation. I want to believe that I’ll have another chance, that I’ll see people I loved in this life in other forms in the next. I downloaded a pdf about how to recall past lives. The book said you could remember past lives in dreams, in meditation or in hypnosis. The book said to imagine yourself in a tunnel, to imagine yourself covered in light, to imagine yourself with a spirit guide. If you do what the book says, the memories will just start coming.

Another Day of Depression in Kowloon

Another Day of Depression in Kowloon

2012 • 15 min
ANOTHER DAY OF DEPRESSION IN KOWLOON is a virtual study and a digital portrait of Hong Kong as seen through the lens of contemporary popular culture incarnated in the forms of video game and screen media. Using the map “KOWLOON” from the popular video game CALL OF DUTY: BLACK OPS (2010) as a field of study, the filmmaker conducted a yearlong virtual fieldwork: playing, observing and documenting “Hong Kong” as simulated in the video game world. ANOTHER turns the violent first-person shooter into a series of vacant, uncanny and yet meditative tableaux, unearthing a formal poetry that is often overlooked during the original gameplay. It combines methodologies from both the observational and assemblage film traditions in raising questions about cultural representations in contemporary popular media, while at the same time creating evocative metaphors for a post-colonial Hong Kong through the reworking of media materials.

Stoned

Stoned

2012 • 11 min
Stoned begins in silence. An image of a Buddhist monastery—a long stone corridor lined with receding columns—appears to jerk forward and slightly recede, or move tremulously back and forth. The single high notes of a piano begin to sound in a halting counterpoint to the agitated image, which fractures into a grid of rapidly pulsating segments. Cho's flickering digital manipulations disrupt the viewer's experience of processional space; his complex layering of highly saturated images results in a weave of frenetically vibrating architectural elements.
Reifying Desire Three

Reifying Desire Three

2012 • 17 min
The latest installment in a six-part series, Reifying Desire 3 is a surrealist creation myth that stems from his ongoing collaboration with his mother. Satterwhite writes: “‘Reifying Desire 1–6’ will use 230 3-D modeled versions of my mother’s drawings, my body, and animated figures. The intersection of the disparate disciplines including dance performance, drawing, and digital media acts as an exquisite corpse strategy for guiding the storyline. Ordinary utilitarian objects become queered and repurposed in pursuit of defining a new utopian and nonpolitical space for me to perform in. The result is an overlap of visual trajectories between my mother and I—her private domestic documentations/inventions and my public reactions to pop culture, art history, and political histories.
A Walk With Harry

A man and his companion take a midnight stroll through the city streets of Philadelphia. My ulterior motive prior to making this film was to basically bring a few of my filmmakers/friends together from the Philadelphia area and give everyone the chance to meet... network... create...collaborate. I just wanted everyone to hang out and have a good time. My goal was to make this film as minimalistic as possible while maintaining the true essence, pleasure and bond that comes from walking ones companion.
