The Mystic

The effects in The Mystic were originally created in-camera on one 100ft roll of color negative film. These include: bi-packing with a strip of clear leader sewn with sequins, creating paper mattes of circles and text, and multiple exposures with more custom mattes, photographed with one actor (Aj Cesena) on a simple set. These processes required six passes through the camera. The roll was then rephotographed on an optical printer and extended to its current run time of 8 minutes. The soundtrack is made up of chopped and manipulated laugh tracks and audience sounds.

Roubaix, a city with an industrial past, is today one of France’s most destitute areas. During six months of shooting in public places, the filmmaker asked the townspeople to think of one or more things they had been told in the past and that had somehow changed them. Through thirteen sequence shots and microscopic images, she then constructed a sort of cartography of micro-transformations of human trajectories, a poetical study of the dynamism of individuals. In between the extraneousness of the images and the intimate closeness of the voices, the ambiguous space of the singular/plural identity is offered to the experience of the public.

La Cueva Negra

La Cueva Negra is a moving image project and photo series which explores the Paso del Indio site as a layered repository of symbolic and material histories. The site is well known in the archaeological community. Twenty years ago, during the construction of a multi-lane highway, a complex (possibly Archaic, definitely Pre-Taíno and Taíno) indigenous burial site was discovered and many objects and remains recovered. But the site was paved over for the construction of the expressway.
