Beijing Silvermine

His Beijing Silvermine archive, one of the largest archival projects in China, now encompasses over 850,000 anonymous photographs spanning the period from 1985 to 2005.

These children hardly meet their parents, who are serving sentences in the correctional homes or residing as under trial prisoners. Separation from parental touch has not rummaged their lives, as they are in care of a home in a remote area in Ranaghat, on India Bangladesh border. Their ordeal has not barred them from nurturing their inner talents and skills in this home run by the pious nuns, called Dayabari. It unfolds the plaintive story of the bereaved parents who are ordained to live apart from their children, but have dreams surrounding them.

"Over a period of five months, I had my super 8 camera with me at all times. Once every hour I made a shot of myself, wherever I happened to be, interrupting any activity whatsoever. For the hours I slept at night, I filmed black. I changed speed and focus in different variations, and decided on these changes during the filming. I do not consider this film as a self portrait. I simply had to film myself as representing any person in time and space, since no one else could be around all the time. Twenty years later one more week." - M.G.
