Dancing for the Dead: Funeral Strippers in Taiwan

Funeral strippers work on Electric Flower Cars (EFC) which are trucks that have been converted to moving stages so that women can perform as the vehicles follow along with funerals or religious processions. EFC came to Taiwan's public attention in 1980 when newspapers began covering the phenomenon of stripping at funerals. There is a great deal of debate about whether this should be allowed to continue.

The Video Diaries

Cairo-based Khaled Hafez's latest work, The Video Diaries, is the artist's response to the revolution that swept through Egypt in January and February 2011. This three-channel video has been adapted for Ibraaz into a single-channel work in which three windows display footage either shot by the artist or taken from social and international media. These moving images - showing policemen; protesters singing and praying; and people apparently being shot or attacked by water cannons - run simultaneously across the three screens, while clocks urgently count down the seconds of the work's duration. A persistent, echoing beat; the sounds of a baying crowd; and a lachrymose guitar solo accompany the footage at different points.

Matsuo Mine is a large abandoned complex in Hachimantai city, Iwate prefecture. I felt it possesses two conflicting natures- those of impermanence and eternity. Instead of the concrete “past” I tried to look for abstract “memories” through the viewfinder and resurrect them as a narrative.

Fat Free Nirvana

Based on Siddhārtha Gautama Buddha’s story of achieving enlightenment through extreme fasting, “Fat Free Nirvana” portrays a Chinese Laughing Buddha trying to lose weight while consuming healthy vegetables. In the beginning the diet shows results, however, after eating the following genetically modified vegetables and fruits- “Flavr Savr Tomato”, “BT Corn”, “Botox Apple”, “Killer Strawberries” and “Roundup Ready Soybean”, he feels very ill and starts vomiting until he reaches the fat-free nirvana.
