Manfred Neuwirth’s Scapes and Elements presents the viewer with a series of five panoramas of nature – five prolonged glimpses of open landscapes. One sees, hears, thinks: Neuwirth’s standards are rigorous, paying close attention to the precision of composition and timing.

The documentary Building Archeology (jiànzhú kǎo) (2011) considers the more recent past. It’s made up of three vignettes about different buildings in Beijing: a museum, an abandoned hospital, and a detention center. The latter two vignettes are especially interesting. In the second, a woman wanders around the ruins of a hospital built in a week to deal with the 2003 SARS outbreak. The third concerns a former prisoner, tracing out a map of the detention center where he was held in 2011.

A film loop showing the similarity of the artist and her sister in 240 16mm single-frame portraits. The individual frames were recorded one after the other in camera without any editing in post-production. Due to the phi-phenomenon, the rhythmically fast cutting of the individual portraits becomes a mixed portrait of both faces. Alternating and increasing, the series of frames changes from one to a series of four portraits per person. At this pace, the eye is able to perceive a difference.

The film uses footage from Trần Đắc’s eponymous feature-length classic produced by the state-owned Vietnam Feature Film Studio. Based on the story of a real-life hero, the original 1973 film was made to provide encouragement to young soldiers serving in the war. Accompanied by Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring, this recut, with its rapid rhythm and suspenseful images leading to ambiguous intervals imbued with both violence and sensuality, facilitated a multilayered experience that disturbs and detours from the source material’s clear-cut message, content and aesthetics. An exploration of cinematic language, the film simultaneously investigates the narratives generated by collective memory and official history, as it seeks and questions the truth and the possibility to construct it from images. A pioneering found footage work in Vietnam, Song to the Front exemplifies Nguyễn Trinh Thi’s experiments with moving images.

Arm, Flexion, Extension is a study of domestic time and space. Haphazardly hand processed 16mm film blurring the distinctions between the darkroom and the kitchen sink. Task as performance: A mundane action turned into an imperative gesture, the author struggles to control her environment. Slipping between a narrative of DIY and a meditation of light and intervening matter as shadow. Base material pulses between the abstract and the everyday.

A young man recounts his story of love gone wrong, whilst going through the motions of a dance partner swapping scenario in the tango salons of Buenos Aires. This is his wife’s extravagant solution to rekindle their lost passion.

The film comprises pre-revolutionary Iranian TV commercials of Western commodities, Iranian 1960s psychedelic rock music, pirated tapes of American 1980s pop music videos distributed as contraband in post-revolutionary Iran, and home videos. Through its anagrammatical title and anachronistic structure, it creates a fragmented, cross-generational narrative of the Iranian diaspora through moments of collective loss, longing and violent disruption. A central question to this experimental video is how the notion of pleasure is shaped through imperial, military and state violence.

At a time when African-Americans, women, LGBT and other minorities had few options for participation in society, a dance-based culture was born that encouraged total freedom of self-expression and communion with your fellow men and women. This underground subculture grew steadily over the next two decades but in the 1990s Mayor Giuliani resurrected forgotten Prohibition-era Cabaret Laws, which strictly regulate social dancing, successfully shutting down venues and repressing the city's once vibrant dance scene. To this day, dancing remains illegal in most bars and restaurants in 'the city that never sleeps.' freedom2dance chronicles the history of these restrictive laws through the lens of New York's legendary dance subculture.
