With 8 Switches, Tim Wright presents six black-and-white microcinematic vignettes of retina-searing, hard-edged, epilepsy-inducing sound and vision; digital hallucinations drained of colour, synchronized to a soundtrack that is relentless and unsentimental. Each new section presents a variation on the same sleek, kinetic minimalism. As each section progresses, the razor-sharp line between a host of binary oppositions—black/white, figure/ground, silence/sound, here/there, on/off — dissolves through sheer velocity. The rapid-fire alternation between these binary oppositions acts like the flicker of film frames, accelerating until sound and sight are wed into a synchronous whole in which neither the visual nor the sonic takes primacy. There is a presence lingering in the dark woods, just under the surface of a placid lake and at the end of dreary basement corridor. It’s not easy to locate because it’s outside but also inside. It doesn’t just crawl in on your wires because it’s not a thing. It’s a shocking eruption of electrical energy.

A chemical painting made towards the end of my tenure as a grunt worker in a film processing lab at a time when I was spending most of my days slacking off down in the lab's sub basement playing with raw film stock and reversal chemicals. This was a fairly disgusting space with dirt floors and four-foot ceilings from which the leaking guts of the operation above hung down, but it was open, and I could stretch out full 100' foot rolls of film from end to end on the floor. From there, I could freely apply developers, bleaches and fixers in whatever ways I could think of, usually mashing in the dust, leaves, and garbage that was kicked up in the process.

Born at the crossroad between Catholicism, Yoruba and shamanism around the 50’s, then considered a prison cult since the 70’s, the cult of the Santa Muerte since at least ten years has been regarding not exclusively Mexican gangsters‘ spirituality, and it has been diffusing as a popular devotion that became a congregation of three million people in the only Mexico City. Three hundred altars are dedicated to Santa Muerte, a full-size skeleton dressed like a Virgin Mary, to which people ask protection from the crime as well as for the crime, people asks to survive and to be able to kill. The devotion is obviously strong in the most popular districts, where people usually fear for their own life and where the mothers ask her protection for their own sons.
