In 1999, the celebrated Montreal photographer Evergon took a remarkable series of nude portraits of his own mother, then 80 years old. The photographs were instantly recognized as a singular achievement: the black and white images embodied not the infirmities of old age, but the timeless strength, dignity, even majesty. In 2007 Margaret Lunt left her long-time home in Niagara Falls, Ontario and moved to Montreal to live with her son. It was shortly afterwards, that filmmaker Donald Winkler embarked on a project that would explore what lay behind that series of photographs, uncovering in the process a poignant family history, a woman's determination to be her own person, how readily she threw off her own deepest cultural conditioning when she discovered both her sons were gay and a most unique and inspiring relationship between mother and son. The result...is Margaret & Evergon.

Wariazone explores the notion of transgender in Indonesia and relations between gender identity and freedom. It raises questions about the politicization of morality and religion after the reform era. Traditionally, variations in gender identity have been considered to be holy in many Indonesian cultures, but today the warias have been relegated to an outlaw zone on the outskirts of society. The consequences of the stigmatization based on the rigidity of social constructions (morals, religions, hetero-normativity, etc.) include non-recognition of their gender identity, discrimination, limited work opportunities, the sex industry, and HIV/AIDS. Wariazone not only situates itself within the context of gender and sexuality, but also points out how the expression of gender identity is ruled by ideology: the ‘truth’ is related to the power.

Thousands of men joined up to fight in the services, hundreds of thousands of children were evacuated from Britain's cities to the relative safety of the countryside and life changed completely for the nation's women. They did their bit for the war effort, going to work on the land and filling in for men in Britain's factories. Britain's families were subjected to almost constant rationing and austerity throughout the decade.

"Why do I remember one thing and not the other?" In her film essay "Grandfather Never Saw the Sea", Christine Huerzeler explores her own family history in an unusual and unusually poetic way. The film-maker interlaces family recordings, found footage and recent images into a visual and acoustic examination of her origins. Upon closer inspection, it reveals the frictions, cracks and unconfessed longings which ultimately betray domestic happiness as merely staged. "Be nice to each other, says the father. We have a good time together". Beyond the personal, Huerzeler's film is accurate in documenting the atmosphere of an entire era. The unease of the individual is also the unease of a generation which grew up in a supposedly free society, yet lived under the constantly looming shadow of the Cold War.
