striations is a two-channel video made by Steve Roden with artist Mary Simpson. It was originally part of a larger exhibition that included painting, drawing, and sculpture related to an unfinished stone sculpture made by Roden’s grandmother. The film attempts to use fragments of “stilled” information whose meanings are unknown or unresolved, to become active again through engagement and use. The imagery includes Roden’s grandmother’s half carved stones, as well as images related to Henry Moore and artifacts of his grandmother’s objects left behind, such as the crayons used in the rubbings, and the photographs of birds she used as inspiration/study for sculpture never realized. striations is accompanied by distance piece, a soundwork that intertwines with the silent film.

This work is an argument initiated with Wendy Brown’s article Resisting Left Melancholy. She applied Walter Benjamin’s notion of “Left Melancholia” to see the political thoughts and the norms in the left-wing movement/ theory traditions as the notion of melancholia. There is the thingness of the thoughts that can see as the lost object. Extends this idea, the thingness of thoughts, come from one’s personal or collective memories could become the pathological fixation.

A slow-motion flight over mountains, polar seas and deserts whose contours dissolve again and again, overlaid with still images, accompanied by the sounds of wind, water and birdsong. There are surface structures and indefinable patterns or grids, superimposed on mountain ranges and ice, desert sand and canyons, merging with them to form a semi-synthetic and sublime landscape.

Breathing for Metaphors

This piece is dedicated to Merrilee Edgar and Peter Matussek. They focused me on my breathing, and the breathing of the Simultaneous Opposites Engine. This breathing, the duration and physicality of which is itself a focus of this video, is also of course a metaphor, one that is accepted through our implicit empathy for all objects. In an inversion: these metaphors are the intentions of Man, they are how we understand the meaning of the world, and how we know "what it's like outside".

The mother figure revisited is a recurring theme in Louise Bourque’s work. A celluloid deterioration that addresses the ephemeral quality of the captured moment (the present) while revealing the insistent power of human presence in even the most deteriorated of states. The image of the mother is like a ghost that we won't let go. A lament for the inevitable loss of legibility.

Zero

"HBOX" or "Hermes Box" is a work by architect Didier; the entire video work is displayed inside a box. At his exhibition, artist Wang Jiawei talked about the piece he created for this venue, "Zero" — a performance art work. In terms of visual structure, it is more like a classic painting. It is performed on a very simple stage; the way Wang chooses and handles social themes lets us think of Brecht's theater. "Zero" tells a story for everyone. At the beginning, the film shows a person jumping from a building. In the process of jumping, seven floors go by, and as the jumper passes each, he sees a scene through the window. These scenes he cannot escape. Wang said that his artistic inspiration and the social reality of his film came from recent serial suicide jumping cases in China. In one case, 12 people jumped, one after another; the oldest was 21, and the youngest 19.
