HOURIA weaves together the stories of Hattab and his grandmother Yousra to reflect on fluid modes of belonging. Yousra was expelled from her village Jamaseen Al-Garbi by Zionist paramilitary groups in 1948, and she remains witness to the decline of Jaffa’s glory where she resettled after the Nakba. On the other hand, Hattab, presented as a hybrid mermaid and a symbol of the shores of Manshiyyeh (North of Tel Aviv), embodies both the liminality of those who were driven out of Palestine and the longing desire to belong to the Palestinian nation.

Oil and Water

This work was a product of life pressures and an interest in science and experimentation, specifically biology and cell structures. Oil and water will never mix and it is this basic concept that has driven the production of this video work. I wanted to create a situation where the two try and come together, despite the obvious outcome. The physicality of oil and water will never allow this union and thus causes an interesting to and fro within the video frame. The images have been mirrored and a combination of machine,electronic and organic sound create an almost abstract machine like structure, technology and nature come together in an exploration of force and pressure.

"This silent film is more of an assembly, than an edit with a point of view. The footage is from my final rolls of the venerable Kodak Super-8 film stocks, Plus-x and Kodachrome. Plus-X was kodak's first film, and it's longest in continuous production [...] Plus-X movie film will be missed as much as the magnificent Kodachrome [...] footage was shot in october and november of 2010 for my film "aka martha's vineyard."

Media's long term effects on memory and the relationship it creates through the deterioration of both. This film was made using my Grandparents old 8mm films, I created the sound from a record that was constantly played in their house when I was a child.

Using a very small electric craft drill with different attachments, parts of the emulsion of black super 8 film were carefully etched away. Colour was added with felt tip pens, and the soundtrack created with the Hellisizer Compact.

Speachless Flower. That lonely flower cannot help telling you that it lies. They are of tenderness but of secrets, of passions but of estrangement, of embraces but of confrontations. Three flowery boys, beautiful, but paralyzed in seeing their perishment. The ambiguous love raises imagined woman as protection; the body of lust offered as a comfort is soon held as captive of sentiments, thrown among ruins. The love is as undistinguishable as the hatred. My offering, can it ask for a receipt? Your departure, can I call an emergency? During the short stay in our life journey, I reserved one lamplight in my chest, leaving the other dying nowhere. In search for that lying flower, which survives, but speechless.

The film documents the members of the "Meshina" band, one of the most prominent bands active in Israel, in their late forties, in the 25th year of the band's activity and in the midst of intense joint creative work that includes a concert tour in Israel and preparations for a new album ("Diamonds in the Sky"). The film reveals the band's relationship with the Israeli music industry, as well as the band's internal politics and the complex professional and personal relationships between its members. This dynamic produces sometimes admirable harmony, sometimes war and many comical situations.

Cameroun : Sortir du Nkuta?

"Coming out of Nkuta" is the Cameroonian equivalent of our "coming out". This documentary, directed by Céline Metger, deals with homosexuality in Cameroon. What a shock to learn that homosexuality is penalized in Cameroon and to see men in prison for the sole reason of being homosexual. We follow the struggle of Alice, a lawyer who fights for the cause of homosexuals and for the revision of the criminal law. The director devoted two years of her life to this documentary. She quickly established links with gays and lesbians. The documentary is both revolting by the treatment inflicted on homosexuals and endearing by the confidences of these men and women rejected by Cameroonian society. And what courage to have accepted to testify openly!

Experimental and political video art piece based on the poem 'Prick' by American poet Ed Madden, that uses the image of Saint Sebastian to explore the attacks of the Conservatives on the LGBT community. The word prick acquires a deeper definition especially when teenagers commit suicide after nasty words are being thrown at them like arrows. But like Sebastian, who actually survived his ordeal, things will get better when we expose and deal with these people for what they are: bigots.
