Language of Memory

Language of Memory is a hand-processed, optically printed film composed of rayographs of my grandmother’s still negatives from the early 1900s, strips of her old lace casting abstract patterns on high contrast film, and the overlapping gestures of sewing and splicing film, related techniques historically attributed to women. It is both homage to my grandmother’s creative influence and a deconstruction of memory through fragmentation and the accretion of associations surfacing from the tactile processes of the film’s making.

Loyola (Illinois) faces Mississippi State in a 1963 men's basketball tournament regional semifinal. Mississippi State, an all-white team, sneaks out of town in the middle of the night despite protests from the governor and state police of Mississippi. The film details how MSU coach Babe McCarthy, MSU President Dean Colvard, and Athletics Director Wade Walker risked their personal safety and jeopardized their jobs by sneaking the MSU team out of Mississippi during the night so it could play Loyola, despite protests from the governor and state police officials, threats from the community, and a pending court injunction.

I'm good at love, I'm good at hate, it's in between I freeze takes form as installation and a video filmed at the Alhambra Palace Hotel in Ramallah, Palestine. The project charts the historical context and aftermath of a concert that never happened. In 2009 Leonard Cohen was scheduled to perform in Israel. Because of increasing pressure from pro-Palestinian voices to dissuade Cohen from performing in Israel, a parallel event in Palestine was organized. Amid protests and claims that the latter concert was a token show of solidarity and a hollow attempt to appease demonstrators, the concert was boycotted and eventually canceled. This story engages Cohen’s personal grappling with art and politics and the ethical dilemmas faced by performers under the conditions of a boycott.

30 years from the formation of Solidarity, 20 years from the introduction of democracy in Poland, there is widespread concern that the Gdansk Shipyard will be irrevocably destroyed through urban re-development. Using fragments of archive film from the popular struggle in the Poland, together with footage of the current destruction of the Gdansk Shipyard, Not Our Darkness is a poetic exploration of how memory, time and place interweave to form ‘image-constellations’; and how urban re-development threatens to obliterate the traces of past struggles.

“Ulla von Brandenburg’s Singspiel (“song-play”) was filmed in one single shot at Le Corbusier’s Villa Savoye, following actors in a deceptive track through the house. In each space, a character performs a gesture or movement. The dialogue between the actors is performed by singing a collection of partially connected sentences. The title, which refers to an opera/operetta-style German musical drama, heightens the tragic and uncomfortable sense haunting the work.”
