Gypsy Vanner Horse

A select group of Gypsies and Traveling families of the British Isles have devoted generations to developing a special type of horse. The age of motorcars changed the role of the horse drawn living wagon to an elaborate decorative cultural icon used mainly for holidays and festivals. The horses originally bred to pull these wagons have also evolved to compliment the art of the wagons. A chance meeting in England eventually brought these wonderful horses to America and ignited a passion in horse lovers from all walks. A new breed has been established around this magical gentle horse now known as the Gypsy Vanner Horse.

The director Roger M'Bala, one of the most important of his country, has decided to film the ancestral costumes of several tribes of Ivory Coast before they disappear completely. Being a member of this community he mingles with the crowd without being noticed, delivering the essence of the celebration.

Using glue and 16mm splicing tape, I place over 1500 individual super 8 film frames from a decimated home movie one-by-one on to clear 16mm film. The resulting floating film-within-a-film becomes a jarring landscape that prioritizes the structure of the super 8 frame over its photographic contents.

Salomé, conducts documentary interviews with real Iranians who have engaged in temporary marriage. They speak frankly about the pros and cons of this type of union as apposed to permanent marriage. In the process of learning about Salomé's alienation from the customs of her homeland, we learn about the complexities of the Shia' Islamic institution of temporary marriage.

In the Araucanía Region, an area marked by historical relations between Mapuche and non-Mapuche people, the shooting of a police officer results in the death of a young Mapuche man. On the other hand, a community member who has been sentenced to 10 years in prison has been on a hunger strike for over one hundred days. In the background, we have the experience of Aniceto Norin, a Longko who has spent five years in prison for the crime of "Terrorist Threat," whose account allows us to understand his thoughts and the impact of assuming his role and his Mapuche identity.

I am trying to use a microscopic narrative to sample and magnify the seemingly entirely unrelated cases of Chongqing Steel and Windows to the World for visual analysis. As I see it, the polluted smoke created by the factory is the smoke of modernization mythology, or maybe the fog of history and reality…. These manmade landscapes have obscured the pursuit of collective modern ideals in pre-socialist China and the painful price paid and hard lessons learned. The massive steel town is the stage for collective sleep paralysis and the march of history. Among the crowds that flow ceaselessly through Windows to the World, it is hard to cover up the massive changes that have been wrought on every Chinese from their faces to their souls by the crazed materialistic pursuits of the post-socialist era.

Historian Barry Lewis takes us back in time to rediscover the first European settlers in New York — the Dutch. The year 2009 marked the 400th anniversary of explorer Henry Hudson’s voyage to New York State and the river that bears his name. This 56-minute documentary describes the 17th century history of New Amsterdam. New Netherland began as a forested island occupied only by a small number of Indigenous people who were soon forced out by the Dutch as they claimed the southern portion of the Island below today’s Wall Street. Thomas Willett, who is buried in the Ancient Little Neck Cemetery in East Providence, RI, served twice as Mayor when it became New York City in 1665.
