The viewer is whisked through a lovely cat-house, which also includes a turtle along with the whiskered pets, and then is suddenly immersed in the painted output of my old (yet still young and vibrant looking) friend, Michelle Joyce. We follow this cheerful personage on a tour of her studio and then get transported to a high-class arts center in midtown Frisco where the work is displayed to a variety of yapping youth in yo-yo mode. The artist's positive outlook, in contrast to my up and down yo-yo swings, makes for a saucy finale of simmering meatballs in this rosy colored stew of our own making.

George Kuchar’s Acid Redux is a raucous journey into the murky domains of mysticism and liminality. Featuring zombie seductresses, erotic interspecies adventures and an animatronic chimpanzee, Acid Redux creates a strange and uncanny world where the familiar falls apart. Meaning and identity become increasingly unstable as the boundaries are blurred between genders, species and even life and dead itself.

"Thirty years after the revolution which caused the departure of many Iranians, including of my family to France, I returned to Iran for a trip across the country, where, through my meetings with the women who remained there, I wished to capture the complexity of the arrangements of this people with the daily reality of their country. During the time of a film, like a colorful Persian carpet weaving made up of words, facts and gestures of women from different backgrounds, take shape the complex patterns of an ancestral art of living which continues to adapt to the realities of its society." -Sara Rastegar

Ivan Melnychuk documents the changes in Kyiv, focusing on the ruins of buildings constructed from the late 60s for workers. As an architect, he observes the ‘improvements’ of public spaces, highlighting small gestures common in Ukraine. Beauty Plus Pity

Beauty Plus Pity

2009 • 15 min
Presented in seven parts, Beauty Plus Pity considers the potential for goodness amidst the troubled relations between God, humanity, animals, parents and children. While an animated cast of animal “spirit guides” quote Philip Larkin’s poem, This Be the Verse, and implore us to “get out as early as you can” from life and our parents’ grasp, a hunter dreams of a zoo where he might lie next to tranquilized animals calmed of their savagery. A senile and unstable God stumbles, forgets to take his medication, and turns frost into diamonds. Beauty Plus Pity contemplates the shame and beauty of existence; it is part apologia, part call to arms.

As "another story" set after the end of the original manga, this what-if "Return" plot depicts what happens to the title character after his final act to save Earth. After drifting in space, the robot boy is rescued by the three members of ravex, and he is miraculously revived — not by Tezuka's Black Jack surgeon character, but by "Space Jack." The newly evolved robot boy will be named "Ratom." The Princess Knight and other Tezuka characters will appear in this all-new story. Musical artists BoA, Maki Goto, Anna Tsuchiya, Tohoshinki, and TRF are contributing to the album, and an event is planned at Tokyo's National Museum of Emerging Science and Innovation on April 10. The album marks Avex's 20th anniversary and what would have been Tezuka's 80th birthday.
