A traditional animation, hand-drawn in 500+ frames (which are also on display as part of the installation). The animation consists solely of a shoe shine: hands move a length of cloth around and across a shoe, syncopated with a minimalistic melody and lyrics written by the artist. Its swaying, repetitive quality draws the audience into a simple and elegant comparison of artistic labor, in the form of drawing, to the marginalized service economy of a global city.

Chronogram is a photomontage that explores stillness, motion, and memory. Using a 35mm still camera, multiple exposures were composed and edited in-camera, creating frameless sequences of images printed on 35mm filmstrips. When projected, these images become a non-linear, non-synchronized collage. The ephemeral quality of the images—their transparency, layering, and repetition—invites us to reflect on the role memory plays in perception, the ways we mentally reconfigure fragments to construct stability and meaning in an environment of perpetual flux.

A hard-hitting investigative documentary on honor killings of women. Shot in cinema-verite style with unprecedented access in remote rural villages in South-East Turkey, the film features compelling testimonies of women survivors in hiding, as well as candid interviews with male killers. The narrative thread juxtaposes the weight of tradition and community pressure against the courage of women who take a stand and struggle to overcome ancient practices.

Halleluia : one of the most beautiful prayers in the world, a magnificent and distributing piece from Leonard Cohen, wavering between the sacred and the profane, suggesting pain, pleasure, lust, and lost physical love ; a mournful eroticism chanted with sensuality and formidable grace by Jeff Buckley, an inspired performer/angel. Hence my deep desire to project my own ritual of images on its spellbinding lyrics. S.M

As the winning artist of the 2008 Film London Jarman Award, Luke Fowler was commissioned to produce four short films for 3 Minute Wonder, Channel 4s shorts strand. The four films premiered on Channel 4 over four consecutive nights in April 2009. Entitled, Anna, Helen, David and Lester, they are a series of portraits of four diverse individuals brought together through a shared residence – a flat in a Victorian tenement in the West End of Glasgow. A movie about the rope holders in Brazil's most famous party, the "carnaval" of Salvador, Bahia.

Made from fragments of a found porno film, where the frameline, which divides the images, becomes a mysterious plastic form, struggling in the center of the screen, vertically and horizontally. The blade of the shutter sections the bodies of eros, according to the desires of the film image and its frame.

Starring Buck Angel, the world famous female-to-male transsexual porn star, and featuring a cast of performance artists, nightclub personalities, exhibitionists, fetishists and over 5,000 leather clad dancers, the movie captures - for the first time on film - the transformative powers of all male gay dance rituals as exemplified by New York City's 28 year old Black Party. Stylistically, it combines elements of Grimm's fairy tales as interpreted by Disney, German Expressionist silent films, the modern documentary, and "arty" porn filtered through heavy use of Jungian allegorical archetypes. The film is scored to a continuous dance mix and intended to take audiences on a phantasmagorical trip. It's a new step in a long tradition of underground 'queer' cinema as a leader in the evolution of the cinematic art form.

DIY, rare, strange art film. A coulple girls from "suicide girls" who branched off to the "gods girls" website made this film in 2008. Its really twisted, semi reality based, a series of scenes more or less. Girls drinking Jager punching each other, wrestling in pigs blood, cooking ketamine, tampon removal, and cupcakes…you know, the usual. It should be noted, this was extremely DIY, shot on different cameras, some of the film is letterboxed and some isn't, this is how the original looks.

Sight and Thought. In the passage of days, inner advancement thus corresponds with a piece of the outer world, the real condition that allows the inner digression and enables the artist to return again to this window, this tree, the house across from here. In the “drawing” on film, described by the gestures of the recorded image, the physical space itself becomes the work. The space evolves in a counterplay to internal movement. Following an insight, a glance falls on one object, then another. This aspect of the texture of the work that connects the sight of objects with the movement that lies within them, leads me to think admiringly of the two painters Paul Cézanne and Pierre Bonnard: Cézanne, the master of line and the “painterly quantum,” who depicts space as a reality composed of individual moments; Bonnard, the master of painting an animated space.

What is a drag king? What is the Drag King Conference? Simply speaking, a drag king is a woman who dresses in a male persona for theatrical purposes. A Drag King Extravaganza, however, reveals that being a drag king is not so simple. During the last ten years this performance art has exploded into a complex and fascinating movement which centralizes around an annual drag king conference called the International Drag King Community Extravaganza (IDKE). Within this conference, gender, sexuality, race and ability are explored through in-depth discussions and provocative performances. This documentary provides a reflexive look at "what is a drag king" and a personal journey inside their conference. Interviewees include Christopher Noe, Kentucky Fried Woman, Mel Corn, Deb 'Dirk' Pearce, Flare, Julie 'Jake' Applegate, Toe B, Sile Luster / Lustivious Dela Virgion, Erin Tarr, Big Papa, Ken Vegas, Dante DiFranco and many more.

Shooting Tokyo with an 8mm film camera as if it were a photo camera at places I'm interested in, like Shinjuku, Roppongi, Shinbashi, around Tokyo Bay, Tokyo station etc.

Iris Out is composed of single frames from sequences of expanding or contracting circles, reformatted for different aspect ratios. In certain passages of the video, the combination of circles and ellipses resembles an eye, returning the gaze of the spectator. In the middle of the piece there are rows that incorporate nine contrasting sequences comprising six different colours and tones in alternating combinations. Besides the physical impact of this piece, I am primarily interested in the relation between the edges of planes/shapes and the confines of the screen. What’s fascinating to me is the way in which the colour fields are reproduced by the eye and brain, affecting consciousness and perception. - Simon Payne
