In a mischievous media remix, Erik Bünger cross-wires vastly disparate cultural responses to the 1912 sinking of the Titanic, jamming the smooth road by which history becomes popular myth. The music video for Céline Dion’s chartbuster My Heart Will Go On (1997) is manipulated and scored to Blind Willie Johnson’s gospel song God Moves on the Water (1929). Instead of an ode to eternal love, Dion now sings praise of God’s implacable wrath.

Recent Mexican immigrants, although poorer, tend to be healthier than the average American. They have lower rates of death, heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses, despite being less educated, earning less and having the stress of adapting to a new country and a new language. In research circles, this is the Latino paradox. But as they are here longer, their health advantage erodes. After five years or more in the U.S., they are 1.5 times more likely to have high blood pressure – and be obese – than when they arrived. Within one generation, their health is as poor as other Americans of similar income status.

Knitting a Frame

The ball of wool seen at the sitter's feet loops over the single-frame release of a 16mm Bolex camera and back to the knitting. For every stitch that is knitted, an exposure is made, creating a structural relationship between production of fabric and a frame.

City Reflections: Vancouver 1907 - 2007

On May 7, 1907, Seattle filmmaker William Harbeck captured street scenes in Vancouver, Canada on movie film. Shot from the front of a moving B.C. Electric Railway streetcar, this is the earliest known surviving film footage of the city. See the residents of 1907 going to work, shopping, cycling. See Vancouver landmarks like the first Hotel Vancouver, the Carnegie Library, the Hudson's Bay store. One hundred years later in 2007, we take a trip down the same streets and note a century of change. Compare the same street scenes recorded 100 years apart. Presented by the Vancouver Historical Society.
