34 x 25 x 36 is Jesse Epstein's third installment in a trilogy of films (along with The Guarantee and the Sundance award-winning Wet Dreams and False Images) examining issues of body image from quirky and revealing angles. This time, we are taken into the inner workings of the Patina V Mannequin Factory in City of Industry, Calif., where the artistry, craft and marketing that go into creating "the ideal woman of the moment" — in plastic — are accompanied by a remarkable amount of reflection on just what that ideal means (one thing it means is a 34" x 25" x 36" figure). Patina V is a place where the owner will tell women (and then run for cover), "There are no perfect bodies out there. We make the perfect body." And the chief designer harkens back to the roots of his craft not only in French 19th-century wax figures but also in the religious icons of medieval times.

The nails society constructs. The sound of hummer raises the City of Nails. A hole is opened in the ground. Huge fluid mass overflows the city. The fluid shapes as humans. The humans interfere with the construction. The nails building ideology is disturbed. The nails have to nail the humans.

Representation of the physical and emotional development of a woman and a man, as separate entities and the relation that is creating between them. The inner power and confusion of the woman in relation to the physical weakness and uncertainty of the men creates an intense emotional connection between them.

A unique encounter between a grandmother, a grandfather and a bird. Each of them gives us a clue about the relationship between humans and animals.

A child lost in nature and saved. On the other hand, a relationship is about to finish. Will nature allow to repair broken relationships?

My Favourite Grassy Plain. Oguchi Yoko belongs to that special category of film makers for whom life, work, documentary and fiction are basically one and the same thing. She is her film, her films are her. There is one significant theme that keeps returning, her masochistic tendencies. Here she returns to a relationship with someone who deceived her. A true story, of course.

Yet we know less about these depths than about the moon. This film documents the technical, scientific, and ecological challenges of deep sea researchers. Scientists work worldwide together to collect data on the physical state of the upper ocean. With more than 3000 autonomous floats they monitor the oceans for influences on weather systems like El Nino or the monsoon. Does it affect global climate change? Does the deep sea offer solutions for the CO2 issue? Researchers in the Okinawa Trough are trying to find out. The sea floor harbors enormous amounts of resources: oil, natural gas, methane. Scientists work hard to try and locate these materials. Millions of deep sea dwellers are waiting for their discovery. The Census of Marine Life is trying to catalogue these bizarre ocean creatures before they disappear.

This little film was blown up from Super 8 to 16mm Kodachrome, and was shot frame by frame on the balcony of the 15th floor of the Bourcry tower. This was during one of the Preview Shows at Light Cone when a violent storm in Paris transformed day into night. When I got home, the water had seeped into my camera, rendering it definitively out of order.

Beijing Changping Qiliqu Temporary Shelter is a shelter that was part of the network of temporary shelters used in China from the early 1950s to accommodate homeless people (the liumang 流氓). Changping Qiliqu shelter was used as a detention center in the 1990s, in particular, to incarcerate recalcitrant Yuanmingyuan artists, including Xu Ruotao. With its cold and soulless images, this video has a latent subversive tone, and a consistent vision of a hostile world.

Gillian Ayres studied at Camberwell School of Art from 1946-50, before running the AIA Gallery with painter Henry Mundy whom she married. As a young artist in the 1950’s, Ayres was closely involved with leading British abstract artists including Roger Hilton. Ayres was quick to respond to European tachism and American abstract expressionism, creating a body of work that placed her in the forefront of her generation. In the sixties she was the only woman artist to be represented in the important ‘Situation’ exhibitions, showing large paintings combining oil and paint that aimed for the sublime using very radial drip and pour techniques of action painting.

Sun (One Day Old) is the montage of 35mm photographs of different superior mirages of the sun at the moment of sunset.

On its back is a mountain range along its spine, and at the foot of the mountain is a wide, wide forest. In the depths of the forest, three cephalopods with big eyes are playing a game with mysterious cards that resemble playing cards.
