2008 • 55 min
In the dangerous days of World War II, there were few roles more glamorous - and dangerous - than that of the fighter pilot. And while the rest of the country lined up to do battle, African Americans were no different. They wanted to show their patriotism by taking to the skies, fighting the enemy and protecting their country. But first they had to conquer formidable foes already firmly entrenched on the home front - racial prejudice and discrimination. "FLY BOYS: WESTERN PENNSYLVANIA'S TUSKEGEE AIRMEN," tells the story of the brave men who battled in the air and on the ground. Reportedly, more than 56 men from Western Pennsylvania served as Tuskegee Airmen and many are alive and well today. "FLY BOYS" tells the personal stories of many of these remaining heroes and revisits that heady and heart breaking time.

The film goes on to document civil disobedience same-sex marriages and demonstrations across New York State, the Nyack Ten legal suit against New York state and the first day of legal same-sex marriages in Boston Massachusetts in May 2004. "One Summer in New Paltz", probes into the debate on same-sex marriage examining the intersection of same-sex marriage, war, the Constitution, race and the family. INTERVAL II explores our transient relationship with the built environment through the juxtaposition of two contrasting types of architecture: a cast-iron pier in Northwest England and a rammed-earth roundhouse in Southwest China. Chan uses time-lapse to accentuate the transitory movement of light over the structures, highlighting their physical form within the altered landscape. Shifting from micro to macro, she investigates traces of human presence within the buildings, as well as the social and cultural shifts within the respective societies. The atmospheric soundtrack combines ambient field recordings including conversations, songs, traffic and natural sounds with old recordings of her grandmother's Hakka songs.

Le Corbusier au Mistral

Le Corbusier au Mistral

2008 • 6 min • Germany
"Afternoon shift in Marseilles coupled with the stormy mistral. I love Bauhaus and filmed a big complex by Le Corbusier 'Unité d'habitation' in which, besides apartments, there were originally shops, a hotel, a kindergarten and everything necessary. What's interesting for me, however, is above all to try to get a fragmentary, cinematic feel of the three-dimensional concrete sculpture, thereby experiencing the natural power of the mistral. An intense blue, recurring stage-like views that open up a second level of the image, and a captivating depth of field linger in the memory of the viewer.” —Milena Gierke
