East of Que Village

Shot in the rural Chinese province of Hebei, this work captures a pack of wild dogs scavenging in an arid desolate landscape. East of Que Village considers the impact of Chinese industrialisation and urbanisation on rural communities, casting fresh light on those neglected by the new social-economic paradigm. The dogs, which literally have to eat each other to survive are juxtaposed with a group of villagers who struggle in the same ways. The work reflects the sense of isolation and loss increasingly present in Chinese society as communities are scattered, traditional rural villages are dissolved, and the fight for survival takes hold. The work's title signals to the only road leading from the village to the outside world.

Prague Winter

So part of what's so surprising about Prague Winter is that it feels so lived in, so thoroughly grounded. It's not so much that Jennings makes Prague look like Manhattan (although there are commonalities in terms of architecture and the gaps of light between it). But the film restricts itself to sights on and around the tram, which provides an uncharacteristic linearity to the film. What's more, Jennings' status as a guest observer seems to bring out a humanism in his work, as he fixates on the elderly and, implicitly, the history to which they've been subjected. The post-Communist malaise hardens into grim acceptance, and this, along with the physical traces of Prague's history as manifested in the built environment, is what fascinates Jennings here. His camera is tender and unobtrusive, as you would expect from a filmmaker of his sensitivity.

Using dramatic reconstruction, archive footage and testimony from survivors – including cult-leader Jim Jones’s own son Stephan – this film tells the story of what really happened on that apocalyptic day.

'I Dreamt of Flying' is a mixed media documentary, combining hand-drawn illustration with archive material. The piece focuses on the crews of Bomber Command who sacrificed their lives in the skies to help end World War II. My intention was to illustrate the distinct contrasts between the heroic and romanticised perceptions of the R.A.F and the brutal and terrifying realities so many young airmen faced night after night. The film is a tribute to those men who risked their lives and to my grandfather; an RAF tail-gunner 1943-44.

Investigators torture and threaten them into false confession and the innocent family from Jindo countryside becomes a scapegoat of a political conspiracy. As a result, they end up spending 18 years in prison. The tragedy of the case caused by our lack of interest and negligence of the people from their village is beyond our imagination.
