Sketch Film #5 (Tomonari Nishikawa, 2007, 3 min., super 8, silent, 18/24fps, b&w, USA) This is the last film in the series. I shot at the site of Marin Headlands County in California when I was an artist in residence at the Headlands Center for the Art. The footage shows the nature in the area, as well as the historic buildings originally built for the US Army, including batteries and the Nike Missile Site. It was all edited in camera and hand-processed afterwards.

These telluric landscapes transfigured by Fouchard's manipulations on the image (animation techniques, toning, etc.) of a great plasticity, tell the history of this mountain populated with incantations, and its belonging to this wild nature.

Talsi is a little town in Latvia by the border, inhabited mostly by women due to the enormous loss of human lives during the WWII. The story of a province becomes the choral story of a feminine universe evoked by Liga the fortuneteller, who enters into the lives of the women she meets, speaking with them and interiorizing their lives, which she then transmits in open monologues in front of the camera.

Natural Family Values: A Community Divided

Kanab, Utah, a small, western town founded by Mormon polygamists, is now the scene of a city divided. The people are split between a religious majority, struggling to assert its conservative identity, and a vocal minority determined to make their home in a community afraid of change. Fearing a threat to their way of life, the mayor and city council unanimously approve a resolution. This defines the kind of families they would like to see move in as 'one man, one woman' with a 'full quiver' of children. Natural Family Values is an intimate portrait of a community at odds with itself, and what happens when democracy and theocracy clash.

Speaking Up 2

Using the same interview techniques applied in her highly successful Speaking Up (2005), Tammy Cheung turns her attention from Hong Kong to Mainland China. In Speaking Up II, she interviews around two dozen students from a well-respected primary school in Jiangxu (near Shanghai). They are asked to express their views on different topics such as personal issues, family, gender, society, and more. Presented in a skilfully edited montage and intertwined with footage of their daily lives at school, their answers highlight the changing face of today’s China.
