Signal Cross Over

Signal Cross Over

2007 • 4 min
"Signal Cross Over is about assisted love suicide and the noisy transition into the afterlife. He is dead and, with his guidance, she will join him via a ritualized live cremation process. Shot on an old studio tube camera from 1983, all effects were done live with alcohol, glass, fire, and lights. The sounds were also created using old technology: a burning ear cone/candle, a police scanner, and a Theremin. The music of the afterlife consists of old-time Gospel, Hindu devotionals, an Islamic call to prayer, and pre-Christian Celtic folk singing. The songs were shredded, performed, and then remixed to signify all of the souls passing on." - Kristie Alshaibi

As a dark architectural fantasy which turns spaces into buttresses, visibility of interim~ can be seen in the same category as Piranesi´s prison paintings, and also the oblique light and shade of German Expressionism. Whether copperplate engraving, film or digital animation: All forms give priority to becoming over being. (Maya McKechneay)

La Princesse est indisposée, elle ne reçoit personne

La Princesse est indisposée, elle ne reçoit personne

2007 • 16 min
The movie is composed with a series of studies which as a whole, deal with day-to-day and solitary moments of a woman played by different actresses. I intend here to capture casual gestures which suggest a sense of uncanny, closely related to psychoanalysis, between autoerotism and the genre movie. Each movements could turn the ritual into a horror scene but remain finally in a limited state. Each daily gesture becomes part of a singular ritual, undramatical, suggesting rather than explicitely showing. The ritual in each study favors very much aestheticism and falls little by little into informal and uncertainty. The idea is that the more the gestures are structural, the more they are infamous on us. These studies function throughout fictional portraits between the main actress (who plays in three studies) and myself. They express our excessive behaviour with the existence.
