Hibernation

2007 • 10 min • South Korea
'hibernation ' is conceived from the videotape of the wedding ceremony and the daughter's home video. In the work process, the filmmaker pays attention to the details being recorded, what I remember, and the relationship to lead it in the new detail. Hand printing performs the role of editing and printing simultaneously. As a result, the print created in this process will be a result and new material at the same time. Additive printing procedure is taken as a manner of recording in this film.

Mobius Loops

Mobius Loops

2007 • 15 min • United Kingdom
A performance work for multiple projectors in which the starting point is my sound & image experiments of the 70s. The film and sound material was prepared in one simple action by bleaching away the side of a length of black leader, leaving a clear strip running along its length. The film has two sets of perforations and is twisted into a loop, known as a Mobius Loop. On projection, the strip of projected light switches from side to side, followed by a change in tone of the sprocket holes. Three 16mm projectors lie on their sides, and the loops are projected onto the screen as stacked blocks of light, gradually coloured by gels. The performance also makes use of the sound tone controls of the three projectors. First performed at Star & Shadow Cinema, Newcastle 2007 with sound mix by Lynn Loo. G.S.
Nefertiti's Odyssey

Nefertiti's Odyssey

2007 • 45 min
There are two strands to this intriguing documentary about the famous bust of the Egyptian queen, which was discovered in 1912 by German archaeologist Ludwig Borchardt. The first is about Borchardt and how he pulled a bit of a swiftie on the Egyptians to get the thing back to Berlin, while the second is about what Nefertiti has been up to lately - being X-rayed and so on in a bid to dispel doubts about her authenticity. The man who connects the strands is Adolf Hitler, who fell in love with the spectacular limestone bust, left, and wanted it to be the centrepiece of a new Egyptian museum in Berlin. The Egyptian government, having realised what it had lost, had been clamouring for the piece's return but Hitler refused, eventually having it hidden away in a salt mine for protection from Allied bombing raids.

Despite the incomprehension and rejection he suffers, Jesús Emilio "Chure" assumes his female personality under the name of Stefany, a transvestite who faces his homosexuality in a closed, homophobic and marginalized environment in the region of Chocó, Colombia. The documentary narrates Stefany's difficult story, in first person, in intimacy, with her faith, her pains and loneliness, in a macho environment in which she must overcome her condition of "black, poor, transvestite and ugly", and break with cultural prejudices. In the midst of praises, prayers, songs, music and alcohol, a space of encounter, socialization and recognition opens up in rites of death that for her, paradoxically, are of life.
