The Green Bag

The Green Bag

2007 • 7 min
The Green Bag is a single take, 7-minute, real-time documentary shot from the terrace of the Circle Hotel restaurant in Gondor, Ethiopia. While it allows a brief look at the density and multiplicity of everyday interactions taking place around the camera, the film also stimulates questions related to defining the essence of what documentary film is as a cultural artefact. The simple act of framing creates a dramaturgy that at times resonate with early silent films.

This work conveys a moment of connectedness with the sensual persuasions of an imaginary world. The image and music interact in a dramatic way to deepen and enhance the perception of an abstracted experience not far removed from its earthy provenance. The music attempts to create a spiritual sense of journey through the fractional evocation of ancient Egyptian folk song. The sonorous texture of trembling and contorted sound images illustrate the hesitation, solitude and endless dream-scape of the human mind.

Sony DCR–PC120E. Disassembled

In the video Sony DCR–PC120E. Disassembled, 2007, Snyder literally deconstructs a Sony MiniDV camera, identified as the one used in producing Jihadi video material. The model, now obsolete, was the first to feature a Bluetooth function that enabled the direct exchange of data. The video involves two operating cameras of the same model, one of which is recording the process of the other being disassembled until it ceases to operate. Caught in the reflexivity of a narcissistic mirror and removed from any outer context, the camera ceases to be the medium – a device of transmission and distribution of information – and becomes a subject with its own point of view and its own destiny. The photograph Apparatus, 2007, depicts the same camera. By exposing the materiality of its inner mechanisms Snyder obliquely references to images of disassembled technological devices and the obsession with technology in contemporary war.

Here’s Aragón’s bold gamble: reproduce the deadly feats of smugglers in the paradisiacal Mexican landscapes without naturalism or pathos, but performed by children. 13 scenes follow with morbid variations: executions, punishments, initiations. The obvious simplicity of his choices allows for a distanced representation that generates an image all the more striking as it is stripped of all spectacle, reenacting action undertaken by the common of those who one imagines to be potential actors, either present of future.

Making mention of the Epistles to the Corinthians, the title of this film refers to the mirror, which according to Saint Paul is the metaphor for our present condition: distorted, adrift, incomplete, “shaken by an enigma”. Adrian Paci, however, a magnificent and internationally recognised Romanian artist, highly passioned about the work of Pasolini, cites this Platonic sentence to better play with it. For it is children, as joyous and lively as a flock of birds, he entrusts with these fragments of thoughts. Even coming to admire them, in short, as they populate the branches of the tree of knowledge, dazzling with their bright splendour.

Images are shown on a screen split into four, while a voice-over fills these spaces with fantasies, with a mix of encyclopaedic culture and visionary intelligence, made of anecdotes, lucid reflections, paranoid obsessions, urban legends, memories of films... Suddenly, the man appears, in medium shot, baseball cap and fake glasses hiding his eyes. He talks about nature and technology, about Star Trek, the Bible, extraterrestrials, artificial intelligence, humanity controlled by higher powers. Although his discourse follows the logic of conspiracy theories, the truth of his solitude emerges.

The poet Hafez, also known as the Teller of Secrets, used the language of human love and the metaphors of wine and drunkenness to describe his desire for the Divine and intoxication with the mysteries of the Universe. Contrast the current, often narrow, view of the media on Iran with the profundity and sophistication of Persian (Iranian) culture and its influence. The landscapes and characters from the film are all constructed of Persian calligraphy.
