"With Praxis-1 I began an extensive video series, conceived in a structure of successively numbered scenes, which is parallel to all my other film/video works and paintings. Each part of the Praxis-series is approximately 20 minutes long. Both purely video works and also transformed reflections on a few of my 16mm films are shown after having been put in a new light by means of electronic transformations of the picture." (Dietmar Brehm)

In 1994 I bought a small Hi8 video camera though I didn't really want one, as I already had a large video camera. The large camera was OK, but it was too big to carry along on walks. It didn't have legs so that I could lead it around on a leash like a dog. The little camera, on the other hand, was like a baby which could be stowed in my bag. The salesman was surprised when I kissed the baby camera after he handed it to me. I immediately set off on my first stroll with camera. I thought it was great because I could immediately film everything my eyes stumbled upon. The baby camera was like a gun and ready to go after visual prey.

In this piece Dani Restack recounts to camera her experiences of living and working in Israel, the fabled land of milk and honey of childhood lessons. With time spent in a metal factory and a battery farm for chickens, her harrowing tale includes stories of sexual harassment and sick birds. Against this background, there are idyllic images of bees and flowers, cows and calves, intimate caresses, dead birds. Every thing is worthy of Dani's gaze, and is transformed by the encounter, becoming more human or sacred, and we are closer to the pain and beauty of being alive.

When you said, 'I still believe in God,' in five minutes you were full of blood. - Roman Braga Many of us died, many of us became mad, but in some of us the good triumphed. - George Calciu These chilling words from two survivors of a brainwashing prison in Pitesti, Romania are sad reminders of the legacy of Stalinist communism. Beyond Torture: The Gulag of Pitesti, Romania documents the persecution of Romanians under the communist regime. Electrical shock, hallucinogenic drugs, near starvation and fatal beatings were daily rituals in the prison of Pitesti, Romania. Aubrac-Rushes

Aubrac-Rushes

2007 • 14 min
"Aubrac-Rushes is a video of re-filmed images, which we watch as if flicking through a sketchbook of drawings executed in pencil, charcoal, graphite ... These "sketches" were snatched from real life during a stay in Aubrac with Martine ROUSSET and Mahine ROUHI in January 2007. Some fragments of these promenades are also fossilized in silver photographic emulsion ... "Erratic and restless - we stumble into the shots - which search for their lost path - the broken trajectory of a nowhere landscape - the brief and obstinate rhythm of a searching gaze - a real quest: where to go from here? M. Rousset

"Remake" is made from a Super 8 film shot in the 80’s. The fragments are edited by superimposing the different takings of the same scenes. The image produced is strange because we are facing an impossible : the simultaneous presence of several states that could be. Sequences so reconstituted string together as all stages of a confused and desperate love life. This sentimental and visual disorder is combined with the overlay of sound samples : inner music and movies dialogues.
