With the help of film documents, Deimantas Narkevičius reconstructs the creation and inauguration of the Karl Marx Monument, which was designed by the sculptor Lev Kerbel and erected in 1971 in Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz). All photographs used were originally produced in the GDR for information and propaganda purposes.

Prof. Bernhards train film

Around 1995 I found a canister with a tattered strip of black-and-white 16mm film. I could make out the words "Train Film", "Bernhard", and "August 9, 1973" on a crumbling piece of paper. I glued the film strip, which was still in good enough shape to be shown, together in the same sequence in which I found it. Because the first run through the projector caused more damage to the perforation of the brittle film, I had to work on it again and, to be safe, filmed the second screening with a Hi8 video camera. I over-looked the fact that a yellow filter was mounted on it at the time. I mixed up a few scenes during the second round of repairs, and the result was slightly surreal drama which is ideal for this film. (Dietmar Brehm)

Lord Baden-Powell's 1908 handbook Scouting for Boys is one of the most influential and best-selling books of all time. In the 20th century, only the Bible, the Koran and the Thoughts of Chairman Mao sold more. But they had fewer jokes, no pictures and were useless at important stuff like tying knots. In this entertaining and affectionate film, Ian Hislop uncovers the story behind the book which kick-started the Scout Movement - a work which is very eccentric, very Edwardian and very English. Hislop discovers that the book is also very radical and addresses a variety of modern issues, such as citizenship, disaffected youth and social responsibility. He explores the maverick brilliance of Baden-Powell, a national celebrity after his heroism in the Boer War, and considers the book's candid focus on health and well-being.

The filming of reflections creates the effect of printed fabrics, and the often jagged shapes resemble sleeves and lapels on the cutting-room table.

The Wedding Present

It's an ironically dark response to its title. It pictures an oversaturated, white and blue stop motion animation of the double image of a man jumping into a river, holding his nose before the final splash. A bug appears for less than a second, making an almost subliminal connection. The act of falling becomes a figurative abstraction, while the entire image gets transformed into dark blue obscurity. -Monica Savirón
