Taupiri

Taupiri

2007 • 3 min
Taupiri is an exercise in light and pixel manipulation. Using a photographic still of a constructed model cabbage tree and diorama, a custom-made filter was placed in front of a video camera lens and maneuvered to bend and shape the light entering into the camera. The end result is a clustered, kaleidoscope effect of pixels moving like a comet across the screen, and illuminating the original photographic image.

Pear Shapes

Pear Shapes

Pear Shapes ... one of two 'weed' films I made. In the 1950s, prickly pear was a major weed problem in Australia. This is one weed we managed to beat with biological control. I found a nice confined crop of what I thought was prickly pear and made this abstract film. While a weed species, they made a stunning feature of the landscape. Basically I am playing here with the plant's disc shape. Actually the plant concerned isn't prickly pear at all, but a close relative called 'wheel cactus'. Prickly Pear proper has oval shaped body elements, rather than the more stunning circular shape of wheel cactus. The plant looks and is wrong in the Australian landscape. This film also flirts with boarders and boundaries, with these little 'family groups' of cactuses perhaps as metaphors. (Richard Tuohy)
Elis Regina: Doce de Pimenta

Elis Regina: Doce de Pimenta

2007 • 59 min
She mesmerised the crowd. The first sight would rapidly disappear and anyone who would get closer would also be surprised. It is not known if she did it for "beauty or precision", as Guimarães Rosa used to say. But the truth is that stereotypes would be destroyed as soon as she would fetch her followers. And revelations would unfold. Behind her suavely acute and toned voice, there was a deep tone that only few could reach. Behind her humble upbringing, there was an uncommon sensibility and intelligence. Her disguise was her irrepressible technique. Elis was pure emotion. And singing was not her final objective, she really wanted to make people happy. This film honours Elis and creates a singular portrait of Brazil's biggest star.

Americana I Ching Apple Pie

Americana I Ching Apple Pie

2007 • 17 min
Writes Schneemann: "The 'Americana I Ching Apple Pie' recipe was first enacted in my Belsize, London kitchen in 1972. Unfortunately, the original footage disappeared with the man doing the documentation who may have been working for the CIA. The next presentation was May '77, as a cooking event for the Heresies Magazine performance and jumble sale benefit. With the exception of a dozen apples, flour, maple syrup, and eggs which I brought, all the cooking 'material,' utensils, and props were discovered in the jumble. Objects which functionally approximated actual cooking utensils were used: nails, hammers, an arrow, a flower pot, ball bearings, rags, a watering can. The cook's apron was a ripped mini skirt with which I covered my hair. As I state in the performance, 'traditionally you need an apron, but it doesn't matter where you put it.'
