Great British Jets

Within ten years of the Gloster Meteor's maiden flight, Britain's first supersonic fighter jet made its maiden flight: the English Electric Lightning. In other air forces, the fighter jet underwent a gradual evolution, but the RAF immediately made a giant leap to a design that achieved Mach 2. Later, the British aircraft industry amazed the world again with the Harrier, the first operational fighter jet that could take off and land upright, providing vital services to the troops on the ground. This program explores the development of some of the most controversial fighter jet designs in British history: the Vampire, the Hunter, the Lightning and the Buccaneer. Of course, more recent successes such as the Jaguar, the Harrier and the Tornado are also discussed in detail, and the future is aptly depicted with an introduction to the brand new Eurofighter Typhoon.

The M74 northern extension is a five-mile, six-lane elevated urban motorway in Glasgow. The road became the costliest stretch of tarmac per mile in the whole of the UK upon completion, rising to £692m on completion in 2011. This film provides an important document of the important anti-roads struggle which contested it, and of the complete betrayal of the democratic process by the Scottish Government, which rejected the advice of an independent inquiry not to proceed.

All That Remains

ALL THAT REMAINS is an intricate mosaic of sequences of animated abstract images and musical passages that create a chaotic yet coherent and tightly choreographed portrayal of figurative matter in perpetual decomposition. The sound consists of dynamic and evolving patterns of music textures and phrases. Dense masses of granular particles often converge to create progressive patterns of movement, which alternate with recurring looped vocal passages. The animated imagery was created through a multitude of experimental processes, including video 'rephotography' of direct-on-35mm-film animated sequences (painting and etching imagery direct on 35mm clear and black film stocks), object animation, handmade animated mattes, and 'animated rephotography' of live action sequences. The imagery was composited and edited in digital post production.

Dae Woo avoids contact with her, however, by saying that Dae Woo is tired and believes Ho Jung is only being peevish. One day, Dae Woo argues how much a mother means to a child, exclaiming angrily, “Family members have their own roles!” Do men make money, and women stay home? Is this what this husband wants for a role?

She’s always dignified and doesn’t care about what they’re saying, though. Un dimanche à Pripiat

Somewhere in Europe there is a forbidden zone. Lying in the heart of this zone is Pripyat, at one time a model city inhabited by some 50 000 people. An invisible enemy forced the residents to evacuate the area in order to escape. Constructed in the early 1970s, Pripyat is now a ghost town. The land it was constructed upon has reverted back to its natural state, but traces of its former occupants are still visible some twenty years after.

My New Theater VI: Good Night Good Morning '06

This film was made in the summer of 2006 in Jonas's Nova Scotia home. It reuses the format of a 1976 film in which the artist recorded herself reciting "good night" to the camera before retiring for bed. For Jonas, the repurposing of elements from past films is a strategy that creates a dialogue across time. "The style of performance is straightforward," she observes of this 2006 work, "but more playful or contrived, perhaps affected by the experience of years of performing." Here, Jonas addresses the camera through a convex mirror that distorts her home, a testament to her longstanding interest in manipulating space. [Overview courtesy of MoMA]

Shot during a residency in Florida, Schiff’s “Perfect Square” (2006) uses marsh pools formerly explored by ecologist Jacques Cousteau as the setting for the artist’s elegant idea of swimming in a perfect square. Shot upwards from the bottom of the pool, the work is a rhythmic meditation on the relationship between nature and the basic shapes that are held ideally in the human mind.
