Ten years into the conflict, more than 12,000 people have lost their lives as Nepalís ruling monarchy battles with Maoist rebels seeking to establish a communist republic. The civilian population, meanwhile, is trapped in the middle. This film, containing unique footage, is a rare glimpse into a struggle most people know little about.

Speakers Cornered

Speakers Cornered

2006 • 27 min
Shot over several days in September 2006, when Singapore hosted the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Annual Meetings, Speakers Cornered captures the thwarted attempts of nonviolence activists to protest peacefully at Speakers' Corner, a park designated for those with the urge to mount their soapboxes - though, as per the Singaporean way, not without first securing police blessing. In Martyn See's latest film, the park's legendary status as a white elephant without clothes is cast in cold hard stone. Living up to its title, its seventeen chapters reveal that to be shackled in Singapore is no metaphor. Stunning and yet strangely amusing, the litany of oppressions catalogued in Speakers Cornered are nothing if not an embarrassment to Singapore. Singapore's authorities have seen the events that unfolded that week. Why shouldn't anyone else?

Havanna

Havanna

Conceived by the artist as a social research project in a housing complex in the suburbs of Budapest. During the course of May 2006, Erhardt rented a shopfront space on the ground floor of a high-rise building and started renovating it. The resulting film documents the artist experiencing the potential of his own interventions in a sensitive social setting. By including the proposals of neighbors and passersby for intermediate use of the space, Erhardt’s film is an attempt to shed new light on a community suffering from prejudices and imposed stereotypes, while the work analyses the construction of a social reality in post-communist Hungary through the portrayal of an “Advice Seeking Office”. At the same time Havanna also addresses issues of artistic failure and success, promise and lost opportunity…

"Images in this five minute animation are drawn, erased and redrawn on the same piece of paper. The erased pencil marks leave a trail as shapes move across the page. The shapes represent flesh separated from the body then thrown in the air, pulled apart, squeezed, and jumped on. Looking back, I realize that I was going through a mid-‍life gender identity crisis and the only way to work it out was to take my body apart and put it back together again in a form that I felt comfortable with. It seems to have worked. The images were captured with a digital still camera. The movement of the camera lens and the shutter made it impossible to register the images so my animator, Carolyn Stockbridge, and I used a camera with a removable manual lens and we locked the shutter in the open position. While we solved the problem of movement, the camera's exposure was randomly off and we had to go back and manually adjust the brightness of most of the images." -N.R.

Animal Rescue Katrina

Animal Rescue Katrina

2006 • 60 min • United States of America
The Katrina animal rescue was a hard and emotional experience for all the people who were involved in it. Unlike the happy reality portrayed by large welfare organizations, the day-to-day reality was gruesome and deeply disturbing. Companion animals were left behind in New Orleans, dying of dehydration and starvation because the local animal organization in New Orleans (LASPCA) did not have a plan of action to go out and save people's pets in New Orleans, Plaquemines, and St. Bernard parish. Katrina has exposed the dire conditions of animal welfare in Mississippi as well with the animal shelter in Waveland, which clearly contrasts with well-run shelters in Gulfport and Tylertown.
