He promptly fled and joined the Czech Resistance Movement instead. In this powerful documentary directed by Jan's son, Jean Bodon uncovers the truth not only about Jan's wartime experiences, but also discovers that his father was secretly a Jew in a country which underwent one of the largest extermination campaigns of the war.

[desi're] - The Goldstein Reels

2006 • 4 min
An old celluloid film is labeled as being from the estate of Jack Goldstein. The unusual S8 footage is nevertheless difficult to interpret. Due to partially missing data, place, time and author cannot be determined and keep the beholder in the dark. The ongoing investigation has not been able to produce a reasonable explanation of the circumstances.
Tanagram

Tanagram

2006 • 5 min
Tanagram (2006-07) combines an outsized version of the titular ancient Chinese puzzle with a pair of muscular boys clad in updated gladiatorial costume. In the game tanagram (literally "seven boards of skill") players are asked to arrange seven geometric elements to fit within a set of predetermined outlines. Staged over a soundtrack comprised of mock Russian folk music and a song from the Red Army Choir, Molska's athletic performers converse in Russian using semi-incoherent lines of dialog lifted from a Polish to Russian phrase book, while creating shapes against the white background of the studio floor: one of which bears a striking resemblance to Kazimir Malevich's landmark Black Square (1915). Inflected by the parodic soundtrack and the flawless bodies that suggest Soviet-era ideals of the perfect worker, Tanagram is a send-up, if not a conflation, of Constructivist and Soviet-style utopian ideals.
Shrimp Boat Log

Shrimp Boat Log

2006 • 6 min • United States of America
SHRIMP BOAT LOG, the first reel of the ongoing CONTINUOUS QUANTITIES series, contains 300 shots, 29 frames each, alternating between a notebook listing the names of shrimp boats that frequent the mouth of the Edisto River and images of these same boats. "I started keeping track of these boats in 1994 when my family first starting visiting Seabrook Island, South Carolina every summer. I've returned to this spot many times since, making a series of underwater, cameraless films there (the WHAT THE WATER SAID series), always continuing to watch for the shrimp boats. I filmed these images during the summer and fall of 2006 and cut them over the next several years, using Leonardo da Vinci's Notebooks as a guide." - David Gatten
Hide

Hide

2006 • 8 min
Composed of densely atmospheric and highly stylized recycled commercial footage of young, picture perfect models pleasurably applying personal hygiene and cosmetic products in a quick cut montage of disembodied, glistening skins, hairs, hands, and lips, juxtaposed against the sensual application of assorted foams, lotions, waxes, and creams, these carefully constructed, plastic images begin to fade, speckle, crack, distort, and burn with the material deterioration of the celluloid itself, before being reduced to the stark whiteness - and unadulterated purity - of an empty projection. At once idealized and grotesque, the disintegrating images become an integral reflection of the title's double entendre of hide as both an organic surface that inherently decays with time, and the deliberate act of concealing its irreversible plasticity

Versus

Versus

2006 • 10 min
Aukje Dekker’s Versus, records the artist first kissing then headbutting a boxing ball continuously for 10 minutes as a single take performance to camera. Such acts of apparent meaninglessness, allow Dekker to mediate on the status of value in a world without transcendence, which through her acts of banal repetition, create a frame of reference that can ultimately liberate us from the existential void we are all bound to eternally rehearse.
