Across the Valley

Across the Valley was shot, and the sound gathered, between July 2004 and January 2006, in the Cevennes, in the south of France. The film is from a single vantage point, a small area of flatness on the side of a steep vaclley. I filmed the view of the landscape from this point, through three of the four seasons, as well as elements of the scene closer to the camera. The resulting film draws on, and develops, my existing interests in the time-based representation of simultaneity, and in the temporal and sequencing possibilities inherent to film editing.

Inventario

The town of Frontera Corozal was created in the 70s as a modernization and urbanization project in Mexico. 601 Ch'ol families were relocated to identical plots of land by the Usumacinta River bordering Chiapas. I asked the citizens of the town to physically draw in space the contours of an imagined natural landscape or of their own constructed space. I worked with the community council (18 comuneros, all men) to make an inventory of all that exists within the town. The inventory was then narrated by a town council member through the makeshift speaker system that serves as the town’s preferred method of public communication. This project was commissioned for Esbozo para una Ciudad del Futuro, a site specific curatorial project by Laboratorio 060.

A simple event becomes rhythmically complex through changes of speed and multiple superimposition. The title refers to the inevitable inclusion of detailed meta-data in all future digital recordings – locating for example global time, place, temperature for example.

New Report Artist Unknown

The second installment of the collaborative project New Report, an ongoing series of performances and videos, Artist Unknown features K8 Hardy (founder of the queer feminist art collective LTTR) and Wynne Greenwood (of Tracy and the Plastics) playing Henry Irigaray and Henry Stein-Acker-Hill, and anchor and roving correspondent for WKRH, a feminist TV news station whose tagline is "pregnant with information." Based on documentation of a live, digital communication in real time between Greenwood at Foxy Production Gallery and Hardy on the street in New York. A third artist is missing in this "breaking news" report on bad painting, the situation of women in the contemporary art world and the problem of communication without a community.
