Worker’s Dream

Worker’s Dream

2006 • 52 min • Vietnam
Young women from the countryside dream of becoming workers in the city of Hanoi. Having travelled far by bus, they find themselves stuck in a limbo between temporary and low-paying jobs even after paying high job agency fees. Stemming from the first Vietnamese edition of French documentary workshop Ateliers Varan, Worker’s Dream exposes the struggle of the working class in a cut-throat capitalistic environment, where profit is synonymous with progress. It attempts to portray female characters as both juggling with their lives and having autonomy through direct interaction with the camera. Walking while they dream and dreaming while they walk, these women bear witness to a seemingly futuristic and bygone Vietnam, and to them, in their words, “(I thought I was lost in) another world.” Worker’s Dream was the debut feature of Trần Phương Thảo, a notable figure of Vietnamese independent documentary following in the cinéma-vérité practice.
Télé guerre

Télé guerre

2006 • 55 min • Burkina Faso
During the civil war in Ivory Coast, as in other countries at war, the unmistakable importance of the media in the dissemination of information and for public opinion is obvious. This journalistic portrait of Télévision Notre Patrie, the rebels' TV station in the northern part of the country, is a thorough presentation of the history of this channel. Interviews with army commanders, correspondents, presenters and citizens underline the power the media have and make clear that the war is just as much a battle of communication as it is an armed conflict. At the same time, Télé Guerre shows how four years of civil war have depleted the country and which role the international community plays in the realisation of a fragile peace. Little is certain, and this also applies to the journalists who work on the rebels' side during the war and who sometimes cross the thin boundary between conveying information and propaganda.

Many years ago on the island of Beqa (pronounced Mbengga), a tribe called Sawau lived in a mountain village called Navakeisese. In this village there lived a famous storyteller known as Dredre, who regularly entertained the members of the tribe with his stories. It was customary for the people of the village to bring gifts to Dredre in appreciation of his entertainment. On one occasion when asked what gifts he would like, he requested each person of the audience to bring him the first things they would find while hunting the next day. One of the warriors of Beqa called Tui-na-Iviqalita, went fishing for eels (rewai) in a mountain stream. The first thing he caught felt like an eel. 2006 • 30 min
In the shadow of the disengagement from Gaza, west from Ramallah, a new city is under construction, Kiriyat Sefer. In the early hours of the morning, some construction workers from a neighboring Palestinian village, Bilin, walk towards another day of work. Unemployed since the early days of the Second Intifada and drowned into financial debts, Maher Hatib, is forced to work, against his own conscience, in the new settlement that is being built on the village's lands. In a day's work, with scarce time for rest, the words tossed into the air and space open a window to the sentiments of the workers for the land they once cherished. The struggle of the workers remains silent given the paradox of their situation. Their employment supplies the occupation forces that allow the construction of the separation fence and the continuation of the future expansion plans.

Ultimate History Of The Boeing B17 Bomber

Ultimate History Of The Boeing B17 Bomber

2006 • 55 min
The B-17, the legendary 'Flying Fortress', was designed on the theory that a tight bomber formation packed with defensive guns could defend itself. Later models had as many as 13 machine guns, which protruded from the hull on all sides. In practice, as so often happens, little remained of the pre-war ideas. Because not all pilots were equally skilled, the formations often fell apart, after which Luftwaffe fighters shot the stragglers out of the sky one by one. This program shows rare color images of the design stage and construction of the B-17 and, through archive images, provides an extensive report of the mighty Boeing's operations over war-torn Europe. A prominent role is also reserved for the beloved Sally B, one of the last flying B-17s and the star attraction of many air shows.
