How Little We Know of Our Neighbours is an experimental documentary about Britain's Mass Observation Movement. At its centre is a look at the multiple roles cameras have played in public space, starting in the 1880s when the first hand-held camera brought photography out of the studio and onto the street. The film looks at Mass Observation and its relationship to contemporary phenomena, from police surveillance to webcams to reality television, pointing to ways in which our notions of privacy and self-definition have changed.

The film was shot with Super8, Kodacrome 80 film and has been re-shot with an optical printer during editing. The mixing of stills with 24 frames/second film creates visuals with a ‘discordant passage of time’.

The Puerto Rican island of Vieques was used by the US Navy for sixty years, leaving its landscape scarred with bomb-craters and its ecosystem severely contaminated. In 2003, a civil disobedience campaign was successful in forcing the military out, and the land has now been designated as a federal wildlife reserve. But this designation entails its own violence, marginalizing the demands of island residents that it be fully decontaminated and turned over to municipal management. This conflict is the point of departure for Under Discussion. An overturned conference table has been retrofitted with an engine and rubber grafted from a small fishing boat. In liberal thought, the table is a common architectural trope used for symmetrical communication and the non-violent resolution of conflict. Yet it often fails to account for the inequalities that structure spaces of negotiation.

In part Buddhist koan, in part urban love story, the film poses the question of unconditional love, and suggests that there may be an answer. Set in a lonely Berlin petrol station, it tells of the chance encounter between two strangers - a young Turkish woman who works at the petrol station and an enigmatic Russian immigrant who walks in one night. Abruptly he opens a conversation which leads them to embark on a fantastic journey, and to an end that no one is prepared for.

In a cyclical structure from dark to light, this film is a reflection on growing up in Beirut during the civil war years and adapting to the "post war" life: accepting the body that is in ruin, and learning to live in the city that is always already in ruin.
