On the Other Side of the River

The film deals with the (non)memory of WW2 concentration camps in Italy, in which numerous Slovenian civilians were detained. Three concentration camps were situated just across the Slovenian-Italian border, and this is also where a new concentration camp - a detention center for migrants - was being built at the time of making this film. Further, the film discusses the issue of statelessness - by comparing everyday situations endured by the Roma people in Rome, Italy, and by the Erased people in Slovenia - they too were, and still often are, detained in Italian and Slovenian detention centers.

Based on the best-selling collection of true ghost stories "Shin Mimibukuro," and produced by masters and rising directors of the horror genre, including Norio Tsuruta of "Ring 0," Takashi Shimizu of "Ju-on," and Yô Takahashi, the screenwriter of "Ring," the latest and fourth series of the popular "Japanese Horror" series "Kaidan Shin Mimibukuro" is here. The directors include the TBS drama genius Akio Yoshida of "Kamaitachi no Yoru," the highly acclaimed newcomer Keisuke Toyoshima of "Kaidan Shin Mimibukuro Gekijouban" and "Kaiki Daikazoku," Kenji Murakami of the "Jurei" series, Masaya Kakei, whose "Bijokan" was highly praised at international film festivals, and the active film director Hirono Yamada. The main cast features Mei Kurokawa from "Mondai no Nai Watashitachi" and the popular BS-i drama "Keitai Keiji." Other notable cast members include Nana Eikura and Masahiro Toda of "Cure."

Oral Fixations

15 minutes from the 7 hour animation. Oral Fixations is a single channel video installation that evolves over a 7 hour time period. The project is a darkly humorous look at a habit of endless consumption and the resulting accumulation of waste. A narrative gradually emerges from the on-screen action that depicts a large mouthed character who dances while flossing its one protruding tooth. A conveyor belt regularly delivers factory-farm fresh hams that the character delights in taking one large bite from and then tossing aside. Over the duration of the piece the hams begin to pile up in the room until at the end of seven hours the room is filled with the refuse of this gluttony. The viewer is encouraged to revisit the piece periodically throughout the day and see how the discarded hams build an oddly humorous environment of waste around the character.

It’s filled with 19 actions on subways, commuters and stations, also containing the very first surf-panel seen in Swedish graffiti movies. Watch the AM/24-7 crew destroy a subway car during rush hour, keepings other people out of their way.

Sky Burial: A Tibetan Death Ritual

Sky Burial follows the ritual of "jha-tor", the giving of alms to birds in a northern Tibetan monastery - where the bodies of the dead are offered to the vultures as a final act of kindness to living beings. At the Drigung Monastery lamas chant to call the consciousness from the body. Juniper incense is burned to summon the vultures. Special body breakers, or "rogyapas", unwrap the bodies and cut away the flesh. The bones are crushed and mixed with tsampa, roasted barley flour. The entire body is consumed by the birds, assuring the ascent of the soul. The sky, or the universe, is where the sacred world lies. To merge with the sky after death is a holy event, one that replaces the sufferings of this world with peace.

Marcelinho

Paucar’s work recasts Western histories in the context of his Indigenous Andean world. Marcelinho documents a performance during which the artist mounted a bicycle wheel onto a stool in the middle of a large forest clearing in Peru, reimagining Marcel Duchamp’s famous readymade (a sculpture created from found objects). He removed the spokes, buried them, and set the stool on fire. Only the wheel’s metal rim remained, which Paucar then rolled around the grass using a stick. He recalled, “When I saw Duchamp’s Bicycle Wheel at a museum in Berlin. . . . it made me remember how I would play with a bicycle wheel as a child.” [Overview Courtesy of MoMA]
