The Magic Flute for Children

Mozart's masterpiece is presented in a version shortened to 60 minutes for the youngest (from 5 years), young and also adult audiences, thus providing children with their first insight into the fascinating world of opera. Papageno is the presenter, who accompanies the audience through the piece in an easily understandable, cheerful manner, and he experiences his adventures with the prince Tamino, who has fallen in love with Pamina, the daughter of the Queen of the Night, and yearns to liberate her from the kingdom of Sarastro, who has abducted her. However, until the happy ending of the piece, there are numerous hindrances to be overcome, such as wild beasts that bar Tamino's path, or Monostatos, who has also fallen in love with Pamina. And even if Papageno is in no mood for heroic deeds, his yearning for a "girl or young woman" is rewarded - and her name, of course, is Papagena.

"Procession" is a portrait of the modern Colombian city of Medellín filmed during the city's Feria de las Flores, or Flower Fair, a famous annual celebration. Held during the first two weeks of August, this period of festivity was established in the late 1950s to celebrate the importance of flower growers in the regions near Medellín. It has since grown to include a range of festivities and to celebrate many aspects of this city and its surroundings. Procession proceeds through the city with a near-continuous camera motion from left to right.

Playing Jacob

Loosely exploring the historical weight of institutionalized religion in a postmillennial society, and its relationship to individual spirituality, the filmmaker places herself into the Jacob myth of the Pentateuch. She plays the role of Jacob in an attempt to come to terms with her religious upbringing, and her anxious ambivalence towards her own agnosticism. Inspired by the in-camera techniques of the early cinema of Meliese, the film and all of its special effects were shot and edited entirely in-camera in one take.

Al Nakba (la Catastrophe)

Abdelkarim Hassan Ibrahim Mohamed Moustafa Mahmoud ABOUSROUR Al Natifi, recounts the 1948 Nakba (catastrophe) and the exodus of the Palestinian Arab population during the Israeli occupation. 700,000 to 750,000 Palestinian Arabs fled or were expelled from their towns and villages during this war. They were generally denied the right to return. 400 Arab villages were abandoned, evacuated or destroyed. Their descendants now number more than 5,000,000.

Home on the Island

In 1851, over one hundred and fifty residents of Arainn Mhor Island, off the coast of Donegal, were evicted from their homes. Speaking only Gaelic, they stayed together as a group upon arrival in the new world, and worked on the railroads in Canada. After a time, they found their way to Beaver Island, in the middle of Lake Michigan, where they established a new community, a miniature Arainn Mhor in exile. Home on the Island tells the story of the evictees and their journey to Beaver Island but, more importantly, it endeavoured to describe the character of the two communities who share the same ancestry, but are separated by the Atlantic Ocean.

The film pays tribute to the dignity, humor, intelligence, and human richness of these people who are confronted day after day with violence, racism, and corruption.

Junji Inagawa: The Legend of Ghost Story 3

His abstract steel constructions, often painted in bold colours, forged a new and internationally influential sculptural language. In the years since his fertile and diverse practice has consistently challenged and extended what sculpture is, and what it might be. At the age of 80, Anthony Caro remains intensely active, working each day in his studio and overseeing every detail of an extensive retrospective at Tate. Preparations for the show are featured in this profile, along with many of his major works, filmed in Britain, Germany and the United States.

In the late 1940s he studied art in London and then spent time in Paris, and ever since he has rigorously explored a limited number of archetypal forms as well as the fundamentals of art’s languages. Over more than fifty years William Turnbull has returned again and again to the head and the mask, to the standing figure and the horse, as well as to possibilities of pared-down, often monochromatic painting. His simple objects, which draw on both primitive and classical ideas, often combine presence and poetry in unique ways.

But while making the film, the filmmaker keeps running into situations that are very different from what he is trying to depict. The reality of things on the ground, proves to be much stronger than its representation.

September Ceria

This video was made for an exhibition project commemorating the political tragedy in Indonesia in September 1965. The exhibition was organized by Kedai Kebun Forum Yogyakarta. With the title "September Something. This 3 minute video capture was taken from a long duration which was full of tense situations. In this capture I deliberately took about the joy of children who are full of laughter, joy, hope and the future. This innocent little child named Ade Irma Suryani became a victim of cruelty and was shot dead by a barrage of stray bullets because her father, General AH Nasution, was still able to escape. This source of the film was taken from VCD G30S/PKI (30 September Movement/Indonesian Communist Party) directed by Arifin C. Noer. This more than 2 hour long film is known as a New Order political propaganda film.
