September Ceria

This video was made for an exhibition project commemorating the political tragedy in Indonesia in September 1965. The exhibition was organized by Kedai Kebun Forum Yogyakarta. With the title "September Something. This 3 minute video capture was taken from a long duration which was full of tense situations. In this capture I deliberately took about the joy of children who are full of laughter, joy, hope and the future. This innocent little child named Ade Irma Suryani became a victim of cruelty and was shot dead by a barrage of stray bullets because her father, General AH Nasution, was still able to escape. This source of the film was taken from VCD G30S/PKI (30 September Movement/Indonesian Communist Party) directed by Arifin C. Noer. This more than 2 hour long film is known as a New Order political propaganda film.

Mao and Chan. Russian Children

The film tells about Sergei Yun-Fu, or Sergei Mao, the son of Mao Zedong, and Nikolai Elizarov, or Chiang Ching-guo, the son of Chiang Kai-shek. Both of them grew up, got an education and worked in the USSR. One fought as a tanker in the Soviet Army during the Great Patriotic War, the other was one of the leaders of Uralmash. But the Comintern and the NKVD equally disposed of their Russian destinies. Both were valuable figures in Stalin's game of influence in China and in the bitter struggle for power between the two Chinese dictators. Both returned to China to become companions of their fathers in this struggle. They themselves never met. Sergei died in the Korean War in 1950. Jiang Jingguo became the President of Taiwan.

Tierra encima

Félix Costa, an anarchist militant who has lived in exile since the end of the Civil War, discovers that the Administration has left him for dead and decides to return to Spain. As he tours the place where they say he was shot dead, he reflects on the validity of his struggle and the fact that he has fallen into oblivion.

Pig and Tomboy

Experimental filmmaking in its styling, the short video juxtaposes visual cut ups of various disturbing scenes being acted out (…Martin Bladh and an accomplice in a pig mask). These images play out seemingly in response to an audio collage of interview dialogue which has been collated and contributed by Peter Sotos.

“I just wanted to approach the idea of war in a more complicated and more challenging way” says artist An-My Lê, whose photographic series and film “29 Palms” (2003–04) explore the training exercises and desert landscape near Joshua Tree National Park as a staging ground for the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Boy Mechanic Los Angeles

In 2004-2005 as a recipient of the City Of Los Angeles Fellowship, I began the research for the Los Angeles Edition [of "The Boy Mechanic"]. The vast geography and dense web of highways in Los Angeles demanded a different approach to both the research and the resulting exhibition. In 2005 COLA exhibited two large scale framed color photographs, a chalk board wall sized drawing of a map of Los Angeles annotated with bar site snapshots and anecdotal text, and a ten minute video loop of drive-by footage of the located bar sites.

Fossilization

The video ‘Fossilization’ was produced as part of the ‘Memory Lane’ project, commissioned in 2005 by the International Film Festival Rotterdam. The traditional idea of soundtracks as translation and extension of moving images was reversed for the occasion: five video makers were requested to produce a work based on a composition by David Shea. Each individual filmmaker could draw out his own trajectory throughout the various musical layers. D’Haeseleer merged sound with image into an immersive panorama of fossilised shapes and traces. Images were distorted, layered and shaped into an apocalyptic spectacle in which vaguely recognisable shades and objects seem to be sucked up, into a parallel, enamelled world. Underneath all of these hermetical levels ’Fossilization’ comes forward as a meditation on the slip-off of Western civilisation to a pandemonium of mass-tourism, -media and -consumption.

This work presents a passage through a pist in which perception is ultimately clarified and sharpened rather than obscured. This computer-generated music of SECOND SIGHT features cyclical returns of a nucleus of core ideas, which alternate with a continuous progression of new ideas. The visuals combine direct animation techniques (i.e., painting and etching directly on 35 mm motion picture film) with object animation, animated electronic compositions and pen-on-paper drawings.

The Bridge of Bosnian Blues

The Trial

A film constructed on a text that seems to be a theatrical performance rather than the transcript of a trial. The camera traces facades of communist housing blocks, depressingly unchanged over the years, as the transcript from the trial of Communist dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu and his wife, Elena, is read without pause or emotion. The intensity of the film is created by the tension between the dizzying and unceasing movement of the camera and the continuous and expressionless reading of the trial script, recording a very dark episode of modern history. — Anthology Film Archives
